Unknown lover,
Know this now before it begins.
That I can let your fingers fall between mine
And hold you together when you break apart.
I can pull down the stars for you,
if you wish
And remind you of the days that were better, clearer,
Less full of confusion and numb intoxication.
I’ll sweep the pain off the kitchen floor the night after it fell
From your eyes: splashes of pain collected in a dustpan.
We can fall from great heights and be caught
Last moment, last chance, by one another-
If you wish-
I can swear away a lifetime of love in one moment
And kiss those lips until you believe me
But never mean it,
Not ever.
