Running. We'd been running for days now. My feet ached but we had to save Merry and Pippin. I looked over at Legolas. He smiled at me, nodding.
Aragorn laid down. I thought it an odd time to be relaxing but I soon realized he wasnt. He was listening for footsteps. I took Legolas's hands.
"Their pace has quickened. They must have caught our scent. Hurry!" Aragorn yelled. I looked to Legolas and sighed. And yet, once again we started running.
""Come on, Gimli!" Legolas yelled.
"This is ridiculous" I said. Gimli panted from behind me, agreeing.
We'd gone three days and nights without food, drink or rest. I was completly worn out. Aragorn suddenly knelt down, picking up something. It was a leaf. A trampled leaf from our cloaks.
"Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall" Aragorn said. I nodded in agreement.
"They're not to far. We must hurry" And then yet again, we started off. Gimli muttered to himself to just keep breathing. I focused on what we would do when we caught the orcs. I kept my bow loaded just in case. Legolas smiled at me.
Dawn started to rise. A red sun. I looked to Legolas in horror. We both knew what that meant.
"A red sun rises. Blood has been spilt this night." I said. Legolas nodded, saddened.
My elvish hearing picked up the sound of hooves. Horse hooves. I ran with Legolas to an outcropping rock. Aragorn and Gimli joined soon after.
Aragorns eyes lit up and he emerged. I followed after him, Gimli and Legolas following short after.
"Riders of Rohan! What news from the Mark?" Aragorn yelled. The began to turn around and it wasnt long before we were encircled.
Spears pointed at us. I loaded my bow, not at all afraid.
"What business does an elf, a man, a woman and a dwarf have in the Riddermark?" the leader snapped. I rolled my eyes at him.
"Give me your name, horsemaster, and I shall give you mine." I snapped. He looked to me.
"I could have your head in one clean strike of my sword, woman!" he hissed. That was the worst thing he couldve done.
Threatning me, I mean. Legolas instantly had his bow pointed at him.
"Youd die before your stroke fell!" he yelled. His blue eyes held anger and fury. He was so protective of me. I loved him so much!
Aragorn pushed down Legolas's arm. Legolas pushed me behind himself.
"I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn. This is Gimli, son of Gloin and Legolas of the Mirkwood realm. The woman you just threatened is Amaya, daughter of Hama and Rumil"
"We are friends of Rohan and are friends of Theoden, your king"
The man sighed, removing his helmet. His hair was messy.
"Theoden no longer recognizes friend from foe. Not even his own kin" I took Legolas's hand.
"Saruman has poisoned the mind of the king and claimed lordship over this land. My company are those loyal to Rohan. And for that, we are banished." he continued, "The White Wizard is cunning. He walks here and there they say, as an old man, hooded and cloaked."
I looked to Aragorn. The man looked to me, giving me a glare. Legolas growled low.
"And everywhere his spies slip past our nets." he said. Aragorn spoke.
"We are no spies. We track a band of Uruk-hai westward across the plains. They have taken two of our friends captive." Aragorn said.
"The Uruks are destroyed. We slaughtered them during the night." the man said. He looked to me yet again.
"But there were two hobbits, did you see two hobbits with them?" I said, worried.
"They would be small, only children to your eyes." Legolas continued.
"We left none alive." the man said, "We piled the carcasses and burned them." He pointed to the smoke in the distance. A tear fell down my face.
"Dead?" I choked out.
The man nodded.
"I am sorry." he said. Legolas rested a hand on my shoulder, gazing at me sympathitcally. The man whistled.
"Hasufel! Arod!" he called. Two horses appeared.
"May these horses bear you to better fortune than the former masters. Farewell." he mounted his horse.
"Look for your friends, but do not trust the hope. It has forsaken these lands. We ride north!" he said. They left. We watched them leave, sadness flooding through me.
I sat behind Legolas as we rode up the hill. A pile of orc bodies lay smoking. I shifted through the bodies with a stick, and Gimli sobs, picking up a charred piece of fabric.
"Its one of their little belts" he said. I took it from him, sighing. So, they were dead. I bowed my head.
Legolas began to speak an elvish farewell prayer.
"Hiro hyn hîdh ab wanath." (May they find peace in death.). Aragorn kicked at a helmet, yelling out as if he was injured.
"Why!" I shrieked, "we've gone this far!" I cried.
"We failed them" Gimli said. I looked to him, nodding.
Aragorn stands up, and begins speaking.
"A hobbit lay here, and the other" he said. He begins to crawl on the ground, following the trail.
"They crawled"
We began to follow Aragorn, our eyes wide. Maybe the hobbits werent dead!
"Their hands were bound. Their bonds were cut." He held up a broken and frayed rope.
"They ran over here... and were followed."
We continued to follow him. Fangorn forest was approaching really fast. I had a bad feeling about this.
"The tracks lead away from the battle! Into... Fangorn Forest." Aragorn stopped. I stood next to Legolas, staring at the dense forest.
"What madness drove them in there?" I whispered. Gimli looked to me.
"We have no choice" Legolas said. I looked to him.
"We follow them" Aragorn continued. So, we did.
