That store was special. The shop was two blocks away from my house, four from his. But he still walked there to meet with me.
The shop only had 75 cent candy bars when he brought a dollar, but we split the candy.
Every day after school I walked to the store, and he would show up two and a half minutes later. We sat in the quiet store, watching other students come, get an energy drink for cramming for tests, then leave. We sat in silence together, he sometimes did his homework and I helped, or I wrote poetry and he listened.
He was a good listener. He was quiet and would complement me. On the poem, on my voice, my eyes, body. He was a good speaker too. He said the dumbest things that fit in the best of situations and his laugh lightened a room. We weren't other couples. They sat, pretending to work, sneaking kisses. No, we weren't like other couples. We didn't argue over what song to play on the radio since he knew I loved classical. Now I like Indie. But he wouldn't know. We didn't raise our voices, we could tell what the other wanted with their eyes. No, we weren't like other couples. He would frown and whimper whenever he didn't get his way, but I refused, smiling from ear to ear. I whined when I didn't get my way, and he granted my every wish, regardless of what. We were in love.
That store was special. The shop was two blocks away from my house, four from his. But he still walked there to meet with me. When I walk past now, I fight back tears.
Why?
Because I
look
through
the
window
and
see
him
with
another
girl.
