What I Learned from a Small Town

This place is the only one I know
It's where I've gone from being a three and half feet tall hopeful child to my now five foot two stance on the world
My mind has expanded from an innocent view on life to being filled with the disappointing knowledge of reality
I stepped foot into this town nearly eight years ago and at the time my days here seemed infinite
But now I'm left with barely weeks in my hands
Who I was all those years ago is not nearly who I am now
This place is the only one I know
And it has changed me in a million ways
Through the years people walked in and out of my life and now it seems like my turn to pack my bags and walk out on theirs
This place is the only one I know and it taught me how to love and how to cry
How to hide behind a smile and how to let yourself be seen
It taught me how to be forgiven and to forgive
This place is the only one I know
And it taught me how to take in a deep breath of smoke and it taught me how to open up not just my soul but my body too
It taught me how to cut off almost 10 inches of my hair and how to hide scars
It taught me how to sneak out and how to run through the streets at night holding the hands of the one you love
It taught me how to kiss
So deeply
I learned how to lie and how to tell the truth
I learned how to smile
I learned how to be happy
This place is the only one I know and it taught me how to be the person who I am now
This town isn't perfect one but I love it
My days here may be numbered but my memories aren't
I'll be forty minutes away with a new set of lessons to learn and people to love and hate
A new set of experiences
A new chapter of my life.
