I wipe the sleep from my eyes and stare out the window, at the fields and fields of long grass. My dressing gown droops over my shoulder as I walk towards the door. The last day, the last morning, the last time I will wake in this house. I sigh and fall back onto my bed, my curly, chocolate hair creating a fan around my head.
The smell of sizzling eggs mixed with bacon, floats in the air downstairs as I make my way down, searching for the sign of mum cooking. I smile as I hear my mum, singing the story 'green eggs and ham' to my baby sister, Mila. My nine year old brother, William, though groans and smashes his head into the pillows on the couch, he yells as my dad picks him up and places him on the seat one away from Mila.
"Sing along," he says cheesily, kissing my mum on the cheek. This is how my life is; this is how my life should stay.
"Ah, Ella! I'm making a special breakfast for our last morning here, oh, isn't this exciting! We will be in our new house tomorrow!" Exhilarating. She jumps around, smiling and making Mila giggle, though it sets off Will, making him moan and place his head on the table. I sit myself in the middle of Will and Mila, I almost feel like copying Will, I don't want to go either, but I am older, I am sixteen, I am supposed to be an example, I am supposed to be a lot of things.
"Who is ready, for some eggs and bakey?" Sings mum as she grabs Mila's cheeks, giggling. Dad places our plates down and I stare at the bacon and eggs on my plate, I almost don't want to eat, but who could resist.----
"The removalists will be here in, oh my goodness, ten minutes! You guys got to hurry up!" Screams mum from downstairs. I don't want to budge, I sit in my un-sheeted bed, my chin held in my palms, my eyes drift around my empty room. I don't want to go; I don't want to leave my friends. We had to go because dad was the only one working and mum needed a job, so mum thought if move an hour away closer to town, she would have more possibilities.
I stagger down the steps, my bag for the car banging on the ground behind me.
"Come on Mi," I say crouching down to pick her up as she sits on the ground clutching her toy giraffe and sucking her thumb."Everybody in!" Yells dad, doing one of his, check if they are in the car even though you can see them right there. Still, Will and I reply,
"Yep!"
"Are you sure?" He says laughing.
"Yeah!" I lean back, for some reason I am somehow in the middle stuck between my siblings.
"How on earth did I get stuck with being in the middle?"
"Because you are responsible enough to let other get a first pick." Says mum turning around in her chair, a warning tone in her voice. I roll my eyes and put in my earphones, then get my book out, (which I really don't get, it's an old historic book, that is boring and confusing, but mum says I have to read, so I am reading it).Ten minutes into us driving and it's starts; a slight bump in the road causes my foot to jump and 'hit' Will's foot,
"Mum, Ella kicked me!" My mouth falls open,
"I did not!" I say, protesting.
"Ella, what did you do to your brother?"
"Nothing!"
"Then why is he complaining!"
"Because that's what he does!" Will pretends to cry and rubs his foot. Unbelievable!
"Ella! Do you want us to pull over and you can walk?" There she goes, throwing the 'you can walk there yourself,' game.
"Mum, come on, you think I don't know that trick? Even if you were going to, I could get kidnapped and you will get questioned, and what would you have to say? That you left me on the side of the road in the middle of no where?" We glare into each other's eyes and I think Mila feels the tension as tears fill her eyes and she starts crying, or she needs the bathroom which is more likely.
"Aw Mila, baby," says mum, her face suddenly changing, as she struggles to turn around and comfort her.
"Ella, do you think you could see what up with her?" I look at Mila, smiling at her and moving her toy giraffe to make it look real.
"What's that smell!?" Shrieks Will, winding down his window, suddenly I smell it too, Mila.
"Mum, dad!" I block my nose, mum taps dad's shoulder, giving him a look and we pull over.Hey guys what do you think? I am sorry if you are sick of the whole tests and stuff on people books!
