CHAPTER 1: Get a weirdo reputation
"How would you like to make some money? Quick."
-
IN the west of Scotland lay a large port town upon a river.
A grey place was this town and today was no exception. The town was a constant greyish brown as if filtered through a B&W lense; from the foliage around to the gravel ground beneath. Nothing was saturated and everything dilute.
Flocks of pigeons gathered with their grey feathers and grey wings. The chill of this town was permanent and never seasonal. Even in the parting weeks of summer, the sun had long since gone and left a mere breeze and cloudy skies.
Victims to the windy weather, were 4 heads, bobbing down a leaf-littered hill; straight, curly and tangled alike. Their indiscernible chatter background noise to the harsh warbling of seagulls overhead and the whistling of wind that danced between them.
The heads continued bobbing, as the brown figures waved down the concrete hill, the upcoming autumn the backdrop to their current scene.
Spotlight drew on the curliest head, clad in the same drab brown uniform (though thoroughly altered). With spiralling pigtails and daring, detention-earning red lips, she spoke.
"I'm deadass about to drop out of school and be a stripper."
The second of the 4 girls, indentical in the all-encompassing nutbrown was contrasting in her lack of curls and crimson lipstick. Instead, her hair fell down in long filaments of gold, her smooth pink lips not without shine.
A sinfully, decadent denim jacket shielded the girl from the usual weather. Slender hands were shoved into the pockets with a chuckles and sharp steel eyes flitted over.
"That makes two of us then" she said.
"I think it would be quite fun." the said the smallest, a tiny spec of a girl she was, standing tall at around 5". Her hair was a cascade of blue-black cut short at her outlined collarbones. A nice semblance took rest in dark almond eyes, round and full like a deer caught in headlights. "Do you need a university degree for that?"
The last of the four, who had been half listening to the exchange, half finishing her summer reading list, let out a small sigh. She towered over the rest, and at a glance appeared like a mother exasperated with her troublesome kids.
A mane of curls had been tamed and wrestled into a half-hearted bun, whilst round frames sat on umber skin and his curious brown eyes.
"No, I don't supposed you do." She mummered as she returned to her book, deciding that Jay Gatsby and Long Island were far more entertaining. "But, I'm certain you must be somewhat attractive or have certain..assets." She continued as she glanced over at the three. "So, it's out the question for you."
A glare was thrown from first girl to last, an almost comical Tom and Jerry act were Charlie and Joy. A sigh leaves the smaller girl's rouged lips. "You know life isn't fair." The amber leaves surrounding dove downwards in sympathy of the schoolgirl's revelation.
"It isn't fun either. I'm so sick of sitting in rows and memorising facts and going to school. It's all so draining and pointless." She said, the four silent now as they listened. "It's like these days, I wake up more tired than before, y'know?"
