Dipper was walking in the woods to get some firewood, just before sundown. Stan, Ford, Mabel, Soos, Wendy, and himself were all going to have a campfire, and of course they made him gather the fuel. He had a pretty good pile in his hands so far, and he figured he could go back after finding a few more branches.
He bent down to pick up a good sized stick when he came face to face with... himself. This wasn't like any reflection he had ever seen, not even in a mirror. No, it was like he was actually looking at himself. He jumped and dropped all the firewood. His 'reflection' had the same reaction. Dipper looked back more closely to see that in front of him was a silvery, extremely reflective pool of some kind of... Liquid? Intrigued, he kneeled by the substance and looked at himself again. Yet it wasn't quite himself, either. He had brown patches of - was that fur?! - on his cheeks with white spots like freckles, a black, almost animal-like nose, and not to mention the antlers sprouting of his temples! He felt where they should be, but it was just normal skin and skull, covered by his bangs. The reflection did the same, but felt along his antlers. This is so weird, he thought to himself. There wasn't anything like this in the journals, at least nothing he remembered offhand. He reluctantly reached out a hand to touch the silvery 'liquid', but as soon as his hand came into contact with it, the pool violently rippled and lost its reflective properties. Could there be a bottom to this? He wondered, plunging his fist deeper.
Just then, some unknown force pulled on his arm, dragging him downward. He braced himself on the ground with his free arm, but it was too strong. Soon, he was pulled straight into it. He held his breath, not knowing whether he would need to or not. Just then, he felt himself land on his side onto the forest floor. He propped himself up on his elbows and looked around in confusion. Everything looked the same, except he wasn't surrounded with dead branches.
His heart skipped multiple beats as his eyes wandered to his lower half. He now had short, chestnut brown fur, with a few faint dots of white, all of which covered the shape of a deer instead of two human legs. He tried moving the right front leg to see if it really belonged to him. Sure enough, it was true. "What in the world?! Why am I some kind of deertaur?!" he said frantically to himself, feeling the giant antlers on his head. You would think they would be weighing him down, and it's true, he did feel a difference in weight for sure, but this neck was strong enough to support them. Is this even me?! How can just sprout deer antlers and a deer body? He looked back at the pool, but it wasn't there. In it's place was a regular puddle of water. When he looked into his reflection, it was still his deer-self. Well, there has to be someone around here that can help, right? I'll just look around.
Easier said than done. When he tried to stand, he was extremely shaky and must've looked like a newborn. This new body was just so foreign to him. He lost his footing and fell to the ground once more. He curled his legs beneath him and simply lay there. "Come on, stupid deer legs!" he mumbled to himself. He slowly rose to his feet again. Just when he thought he had it, two average deer walked by. The deertaur was surprised to learn he could understand them when one said, "Hey, check this guy out!" Then the other responded with, "Man, what is he, a fawn?" They both snickered to each other. "Shut up, I'm trying!" he protested.
Suddenly, a dark shape erupted from the bushes nearby, pouncing after the two other deer. The two jerks' faces melted into pure fear and they jumped six feet in the air before scampering away. Dipper jumped as well, on instinct, but didn't land steadily on his feet and came tumbling down. Oh god, this is where I die, isn't it! He thought to himself as he looked back at the creature. It was a wolf, actually, with luxurious red fur, and was wearing a green plaid shirt and a brown hat for whatever reason. He couldn't focus on the strange at that moment and was more concerned with the fact that he was about to be ripped to shreds. The wolf turned it's snarling face around and looked at Dipper with glowing red eyes. In a split second, it was on top of him and pinned him to the ground. He shut his eyes, turned his face away, and clenched all of his muscles, bracing for the worst.
When the sharp teeth didn't come into contact with his neck, he slowly opened one eye in confusion and looked up at his potential killer. It wasn't snarling any more... Smiling, actually, and was that concern on its face? Even its eyes seemed not to be glowing anymore, and were instead a greenish color.
"You ok, Dipper? Those guys were real jerks," she said, to his surprise. She got off of him and stood to her hind legs before helping the deertaur to his feet. "Y-yeah, in fine, how did you know my name, and why aren't you ripping me to shreds?" he responded, fear evident in his voice. She scrunched her nose in confusion. "What are you talking about? I promised I wouldn't! It was just one time!" she said, with a pained edge. Suddenly he felt horrible for upsetting the she-wolf, even though he had no idea how he hurt her. "Uh, it's fine! I didn't mean it like that, I meant, uh, I'm sorry I'm just a little confused about who you are? And where I am?" he said, the words falling uncontrollably out of his mouth. She furrowed her eyebrows. "What do you mean? It's me, dummy! Wendy! Did ya bump your head or something?" she laughed.
"Wait, Wendy?!" Dipper exclaimed. Ok, this definitely isn't my world, he concluded. It was similar, yet very different. Could I have switched places with the reflection of myself? He wondered. He looked back Wendy. This isn't really Wendy. At least, not the Wendy I know. "Um, I don't think I'm the Dipper you think I am," he admitted. She arched an eyebrow. "The Wendy I know is human, and so am - er, was - I. I'm not sure how, but I think I switched places with the deertaur Dipper. See, there was this puddle of this mirror-like liquid, and I think it acted as some kind of portal between our two worlds. And I kind of fell in, I guess?" he continued.
Wendy sat on her haunches and looked at the ground in thought, trying to understand. "Hmmm... Well, maybe Ford knows something about this," she said finally, getting on all fours and beginning to walk in the opposite direction he had originally been coming from. "Ford is in this world, too?" he said more to himself then Wendy. "Yeah...? Of course he is, dude," she said as though it were obvious, stopping and looking back at him over her shoulder. He tried to follow, but he still didn't have a handle on this whole 'walking' thing and fell to his knees again. Wendy hesitated, not sure what she should do. "Alright, I'm gonna go get help. You just, stay here," she instructed before running off into the trees as out of sight. His heart sank as he looked in the direction she had run off in. He felt helpless, lying on the ground, not even being able to follow her.
With sheer determination in his heart, he spent the next half hour or so learning how to walk on his knew feet (well, hooves). However, by the time he had gotten the hang of it, the sun was well past set and left barely a faint bluish hue on the horizon. Maybe I'll catch up with Wendy if I start walking now, he thought to himself. He certainly didn't want to stay where he was; he needed to keep moving or else he would lose his mind trying to keep calm. If this forest has things like talking deer and wolves, who knows what else it could have?! And chances were, not everything would be as harmless to him as those he had already met. He could feel eyes watching him from the darkness, and it made him shiver.
Just then, he thought he heard the snap of a branch somewhere just beyond his sight. He froze, and his head perked up in the direction of it. Something's not right... His instincts told him. He slowly and carefully inched forward on his original path. A loud gunshot sounded through the forest, yet Dipper found he couldn't jump. The world around him was becoming blurry, almost like the fuzz of a pixilated picture. He lost the footing he worked so hard to maintain and fell to the forest floor once more. He was suddenly aware of a sharp pain in this mid-section. He looked down to see red gushing from his stomach. Is that... Mine? He wondered to himself as the world finally faded to black.
