(AN:) this takes place in Dipper and Mabel's freshman year in high school in Gravity Falls, the type of AU where Bill is just a regular student. They're in the marching band, hence the title ^. I got this idea a week ago and I was like, I need to write this, so here it is! [plus I've had zero inspiration for the two part monster falls AU x_x] Anyway, enjoy! :P)

Dipper was on the bus on the way to an amusement park, accompanied by the rest of the marching band. This was a pretty big deal for their school; the best place they have marched so far was during a parade that went by the town hall. Yeah, they didn't get out much. The school even went as far as renting a few of those luxurious coach busses they had heard so much about. The instruments were tucked safely in storage compartments under the busses, and no longer had to sit in their laps! Which was especially a plus for Dipper, who played the giant ass tuba. It was so liberating to not be crushed the entire ride there.
However, he was far from relaxed. He had jut discovered in the beginning of that school year that he was gay (well, technically bisexual), and his crush, a sax player named Bill Cipher, was on that very bus. How was he supposed to relax?! Not to mention Mabel had found out before they went on the trip, and she kept trying to get her twin to ask him out.
"Come on, Dip'n'Dots! The guy siting next to him just moved! Go sit with him!" she argued, pointing where the blonde sat. He dragged her back down into her seat. "No way! Mabel, he's one of the cool kids! I can't just waltz over there!" he retaliated. The butterflies in his stomach raced with the thought of it. Mabel pursed her lips stubbornly. "But you said you were gonna do it today!"
He sighed. He regretted telling her that. He had this whole plan to get him alone and everything, but his nerves reminded him of how impossible that would be to actually carry out. "I-i changed my mind! Not happening!" he said simply, crossing his arms and looking out the window. "What if I was your wingman? I can get that guy in your lap no problem!" she boasted. All the heat in his body radiated from his face. "Mabel!" he snapped as he covered his sister's mouth, eyes darting in all directions to make sure no one heard her. She smiled and laughed mischeviously. She left him alone for a little while after that, satisfied that she had at least embarrassed her twin.
He went back to looking out the widow at the beautiful scenery. The mountains here were covered in towering pines, but the few scattered deciduous trees were already fiery orange in the October chill, standing out against the sea of green. Dipper was thankful for the view as he was using all of his willpower to not stare at the unnaturally attractive human sitting only three rows in front of them. His heart sped up just from being around him. Dipper summoned the courage to steal a glance at him. At that moment, the blonde let out a hearty, gut-clenching laugh that sent Dipper's heart aflutter. It was a strange laugh to match his strangely high-pitched voice, but the brunette loved it all the same. He jerked his head away and fixed his view out the window before the blush could rise too close to the surface.
Sadly, the guy was way out of Dipper's league. He was, as mentioned before, one of the most popular kids in the whole band, if not the whole school. Most kids in marching band were usually nerdy and unpopular 'band geeks', which was the category Dipper was often placed in. But not this guy, no, he was 'that cool sax player' that everyone either wanted to be or wanted. Dipper was in both categories, there. Plus, he was always surrounded by his friends, so he truly was untouchable. Oh, but a man could dream.
Soon enough, they all arrived at the amusement park. The guys and girls went to their respective busses to change into their uniforms. He didn't have any guy friends, usually content to just go along with his sister and her friends, and felt uncomfortable without someone by his side. Especially when he was with Bill, on the same bus, changing! Dipper faced away from the blonde as he stripped. He couldn't handle even taking a peek without his face threatening to turn a hundred shades of pink. He threw on the stuffy uniform and got the hell out of there as soon as was physically possible. Mabel and her friends were waiting for him, all in their matching uniforms, and they chatting while they waited for the band director to give the signal to get in formation. Well, teasing was more like it when Dipper joined. Not just Mabel, but Candy, Grenda, and Pacifica all liked to tease him about his crush on Bill, as well. All in good fun, of course, but that didn't mean it wasn't annoying or embarrassing.
Not soon enough, and at the same time all too soon, they had to split up and get in formation. Grenda and Candy went to the clarinet section, Pacifica to the flag twirlers, and Mabel to the flutes. He was all alone, with Bill only a few rows in front of him again. He did his best to concentrate, but his breath was already in short supply from having those golden locks in his peripheral vision the entire time, and now he had to attempt to play the tuba and march! Plus, he somehow managed to sweat buckets, even in this freezing weather. Luckily, he got through the entire two-mile stretch of walkways in the park without passing out or messing up his memorized music too badly, which was a feat in itself.
As they all sat outside the busses and put their instruments away, they listened to the band director say how 'amazing' and 'on point' they did, but as he talked, Bill was coming closer. The blonde planted himself right next to Dipper, who was positioned in the back of the group in his isolated corner. Everywhere else was too crowded. And the best part was, he came alone, without his buddies. The brunette continued to disassemble his tuba with shaky hands, eyes fixed on his work. The blonde got to work on his own instrument, as well.
"Hey, you're Dipper, right?" asked Bill. Dipper jumped and fumbled with his mouthpiece, nearly dropping it a couple times in the process. "Y-yup, D-Dipper Pines," he replied, voice cracking, to his utter dismay. But he knows my name! The blonde held out a hand for him to shake, wearing a half-smirk for a smile. "Name's Bill Cipher!" The brunette did his best to control the tremors in his hand as he reached it out, and kept his gaze anywhere but locked with the teen's in front of him. The band director finished his speech, and Dipper finished putting away his instrument like a machine. He practically ran to the busses to change, but Bill was right behind him. He faced the wall as they changed; now he wasn't just nervous because his crush was actually noticing him, and was changing truly with him this time, but everyone else had already changed and left, so they were also truly alone!
"Yeesh, kid, relax!" said the teen only two years older than Dipper, "Why're ya trying to avoid me? What, you hate me or something?" Dipper nearly fell over trying to get his pants on. Far from that, actually, he thought to himself but would never have the courage to say out loud. "Well if you don't hate me, come hang out with me at the park!" Bill offered. Dipper froze, his heart nearly stopping. He wants to hang out with me at the park? He wants to hang out with me at the park! Why me of all people?! Wait, if he's gonna be with his buddies too, then what's the point? Dipper thought to himself. He couldn't handle being awkwardly there, just trailing along with the popular kids. Except for Bill being there, that sounded like hell. "Uh, t-that's ok, I uh, promised my sister I'd hang out with her. I-I don't hate you though, if that's what you were thinking!" he replied at last, booking it off the bus immediately after. That was the closest thing to a confession that he planned to give.
By the time he made it to Mabel and her friends, he was out of breath, resting his hands on his knees. "Woah, you look like you just ran a marathon!" his twin pointed out. "Y-yeah... I ran into a bit of trouble back there," he said between breaths. Her face darkened. "Was it those same assholes that called you the F word?" she asked angrily, already rolling up her sleeves. (AN: I refuse to write the actual word, the three letter one -.-) "What? N-no, it wasn't them, it was Bill," he replied defensively. Her face twisted in fury. "He called you that?! Just because you asked him out? NOW HE'S GONNA PAY!" she said, cracking her knuckles and heading in the blonde's direction, with Grenda, Candy, and Pacifica trailing behind her. They all looked like they were out for blood!
Dipper ran to Mabel and grabbed her shoulders, practically shouting, "Mabel, he didn't call me anything! No one did today! He asked me to hang out with him in the amusement park!" Thank God most of everyone was already there by now. She immediately forgot her anger and hugged him, a smile ear to ear across her face. "OMG!!! That's awesome, Dipping Sauce! Looks like you don't need my help after all!" she exclaimed. Candy joined the hug, saying, "Our gay baby is growing up!" Grenda joined soon after and picked them all up in her arms, with Pacifica standing there and laughing. Dipper just awkwardly went along with it, now a bit afraid to break the real news to them.
Once they were all back on solid ground, Mabel asked with sparkles in her eyes, "So you said yes, right?" His heart dropped. "Uh, I may have declined," he said carefully. Pure disappointment written across the faces of the whole group. "Dipper! Isn't this is what you've been waiting for?" she argued, hands on her hips. "It's even better! He asked you out!" Pacifica remarked. He sighed. "I don't know, I panicked! I mean, how would you guys react to your crush asking you out? I wasn't prepared! So much could've gone wrong! I need a plan first!" he argued. Not wanting to argue anymore, because he knew he would lose, he simply said, "I'm going on ahead, see ya guys later!" With that, he ran off in the direction of the park.
