  Dear Miss Valerie Delegar,
We are very sorry to inform you that you have been expelled from the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Your acts of trickery and indolence during classes have been repeating contributors over many detentions at the academy.
You will not be attending next year at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.
          Deepest regards,
    Madame Maxine

"Expelled?!" Valerie shrieked. She slapped the letter down on the table in the kitchen of her small home that she shared with her mother in Haslemere, Surrey. "This is rubbish! I've done nothing wrong!" She protested. Her mother, Arelle Delegar, takes one fleeting glance at the letter. Her mother decided to keep her maiden name when she had Valerie. Her father was unknown to Valerie and her mother would like to keep it that way.
With a sigh, Arelle tried to decide the best way to deal with her raging teenage daughter. "Apparently, you've caused trouble. Are you skipping classes again?" She tilted her head and tiredly asked the 15-year-old girl.

"No!" Valerie shouted back in protest. Arelle gave her a knowing look. "Only the boring ones." Valerie muttered under her breath. Her mother hung her head down and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"I don't know what to do with you." Arelle moaned with her hair covering her face like a curtain.

"Dad would know what to do." She muttered under her breath and angrily huffing.
"What?" Her mother squinted her eyes and studied her daughter. "What did you say?"
"Nothing." The girl said quickly before changing the subject. "Why don't you ship me off to Hogwarts?" Valerie drawled out lazily.

"Now, dear, I don't want to 'ship you off', I just want what's best for you." Arelle said while trying to calm the girl with soothing words.
"No, mom. You don't know what to do with me! You are a muggle, which means that you will never understand what I am, who I am!" Valerie's voice grew louder with each word. She was getting angrier, more frustrated.
"I can't try to understand if you keep getting yourself kicked out! I don't know what happens there and how should I know about any of this?" Her mother said, her loudness matching Valerie's. "You need to let me know. Believe me, I'm trying!" She shouted.

Energy buzzed around the room, but the two women didn't seem to notice. "Well then, try HARDER!" With her last words, the flower pot sitting on the window sill burst, sending little flakes of pink tainted glass shooting around the floor. Her mother gasped, her face contorted into a shocked and horrified figure.
Water flowed out of the broken pot and trickled around the floor. Small wilted flowers now lay on the ground with dirt poking around them. "Valerie Grace Delegar! That was my favorite vase!" She screamed at her daughter.
Valerie, however, went straight out of the kitchen and into her small room. "Get back here! Pick this up!" Arelle shouted firmly. But Valerie had no avail.
Arelle sighed heavily and sat down in a wooden chair at the table. She rested her head in her hands and let out a choked sob.

Valerie shoved everything essential into her backpack. Clothes, wand, a few books and her photo frame of the original Order of the Phoenix. Her mother had given it to her long ago, but wouldn't tell her who her father was. She'd nearly guessed every single face in the picture, but all her mother would do was shake her head.
Slinging the backpack over her shoulder, she flung open her door and stalked out into the hall. She stopped before opening the front door. Valerie heard slight sobs coming from the kitchen.
A twang of guilt pinched her stomach. But she pushed it away and threw open the door, letting the cool air cleanse her soul.

When she stepped out of the stuffy house, she first turned right and down her street. Tessa Rose and Valerie had met when Valerie and her mother first moved to Haslemere. She lives just down the block from Valerie and the two became very close friends.
She stopped in the front of Tessa's house, sprinting behind a tree to the left side of the house. She slunk away to the side of the house and picked up a small stone from their garden.

She hurled the stone at Tessa's window and the rock made a small ping sound as it hit the window frame.
Valerie stared expectantly up at the window until Tessa's hand pushed the window open. "What. The bloody hell. Are you doing here." She groaned, her free hand rubbing her eyes.
"I need help. Or something." Valerie said hesitantly. She wasn't exactly sure of her situation or what she needed, but she definitely needs to talk to someone.
"I figured." Tessa sighed. She swung her leg out of the window and balanced on a branch of the tree.
In three swift swings, Tessa was on the ground next to Valerie. "What's up?" She said, slightly more perky.
"Tess, I got expelled." Valerie said sadly.

Tessa was gobsmacked. "Expelled? For what?" She said in a hoarse whisper. Tessa had always been the caring and responsible friend. She was top of the class and never missed any homework.
"Apparently, my humor is disrupting the learning environment." Valerie said in a goofy tone to imitate Madame Maxine.
Tessa snorted and crossed her arms over her chest. "Then why are you here?"
"Because my mother is a right foul git, she thinks I'm a disappointment and a freak." Valerie spat out.
Tessa's eyebrows shot up in surprise at her friend's foul words. "Alright, I get it. So what's going to happen now?" Tessa asked softly.

Valerie shrugged and plopped down on the pillowy grass, having Tessa follow her actions. "I doubt mum'll sign me up, but I'd rather go to Hogwarts." Tessa's mouth dropped open.
"You're not going to try to come back to Beauxbatons? What about me? And Riley? She's a mess!" Tessa protested loudly. Valerie shushed her by placing a finger to her lips.
"I'll figure something out." Riley was their brash and bubbly other best friend who was nearly a fireball of energy and life. She was blunt but funny. "Right now, all I want is to get out of this deadbeat town." Valerie grumbled, threading two pieces of grass together.

"You know, you could always go to Cedric's." Tessa suggested, shooting a fleeting glance at her friend. Tessa was utterly concerned for Valerie and what she was going to end up doing in her life. "He goes to Hogwarts and I heard that he's doing pretty well. You should talk to him."
Valerie considered the thought. Arelle and Amos Diggory had worked together in school many years ago and were close friends. It was a long shot, but maybe Amos could convince Arelle about Hogwarts.
"Yeah, alright. I'll try that." Valerie said before standing up and brushing off her bottom. "Thanks Tess. You're a big help."

Tessa grinned lightly and waved her off. She snatched one branch and hoisted herself up. "Don't mention it Val. Just remember to send an owl every once and a while. I wanna know if there's any eye candy at Hogwarts." After flashing a white smile, Tessa had disappeared into her bedroom and everything looked untouched, as if the late night conversation had never happened.

Valerie chuckled to herself and adjusted her straps of the her backpack. It was going to be a long night with a long walk.
