The day before the Yule Ball was full of students trying to get last minute dates.
Boys and girls alike were scrambling to get with each other, it didn't matter if they knew each other or not. Nobody wanted to go stag.
Valerie sat in the great hall for a study period, run by Snape. Gryffindors and Slytherins all crowded into the hall to do the Potions work assigned by Snape.
She sat beside Harry, who was beside Ron and across from the twins, much to Valerie's dismay. She kept on her stony facade.Halfway through the period, Fred had tossed a piece of balled up paper at Ron's head. Their brother lifted his head and unraveled the paper. Valerie could see out of the corner of her eye that it said, "Get a move on or all the good ones will have gone." Valerie grit her teeth and went back to her work. She couldn't help but hear their conversation.
"Well, who're you going with?" Ron asked accusingly with flushed cheeks.
Fred tossed another piece of paper at Angelina Johnson's head. She turned around with an annoyed expression.
He did multiple hand motions and muttered, "Will-you-go-to-the-ball-with-me?" Angelina got his message and nodded her head enthusiastically.
"Yeah, alright!" She whispered as Snape had his hooked nose shoved in a book behind her.
Fred sent a vivacious wink towards Ron before he turned away to whisper to Harry.Valerie slammed her book and got up loudly. She handed her book to Snape and walked quickly out of the great hall, leaving the twins behind to look up, startled by her exit. Hermione sent her a sorrowful glance because she knew.
Valerie ran back to her dorm. She couldn't bear it much longer. Ignoring them, not speaking to them and hating them was hard work. She was still furious at them, for many reasons. Mainly for their insensitivity and lack of good manners.
Fred had pushed her over the edge. He'd gone and done the one thing that he knew would make Valerie irritated. And Angelina...she'd confided in her and now she's going to the ball with Fred.Valerie was near shaking in anger now. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks before she even knew it. She was so infuriated and sad and dejected that it was maddening.
And in time, she fell asleep on her bed in the dorm, leaving behind the tears and anger."It is getting closer, my dear." The cold hissing voice was now alone in the room. The man resembling a snake glared at her hungrily, malicious and taunting. "You'll be my weapon, my prize." He said while licking his pale white lips. His red eyes glowered at Valerie, who was frozen solid to the ground. She stood in front of him and the green fire. "You could do so much for me and my ranks." His wet, slimy tongue ran over his mouth. He reached a weak arm and grasped her wrist with surprising power and strength. Despite his sickly-looking exterior, his strong grip was enough to bruise Valerie's arm. "We could rule the world, you and I." He said softly. But silent was dangerous. And his appearance changed. He was now an attractive teenage male with curly black hair and cold eyes, complimented by a sharp jaw. He looked young enough to attend Hogwarts. "Come on, just show me those pretty golden eyes." He whispered in her ear, dragging her closer.
Valerie shook violently. She refused to pry open her eyes or see his snake eyes. But when she did, unwillingly, they blazed a color bright as copper.Valerie woke with a small intake of breath. The sun outside shone brightly through the window next to her bed. She tried to throw off her covers, but was stopped by a pain in her right arm. She lifted her wrist to see a purple-yellow bruise tainting her pale skin. The sight was enough to make her sick. She clutched her stomach and stumbled into the bathroom, her head spinning and eyes rolling back.
After emptying her stomach, she leaned back onto the closed door, staring at her arm in terror. The spot outlined the shape of a hand, her hand. As if she was the cold, evil man in her dreams.
A sharp rapping on the door brought Valerie back down to earth. "Val? You in there?" Ginny's voice echoed through the door.
Valerie's head spun. "Yeah." She croaked. Her vision was tunneled and she fell to the ground on her knees with a thump.Ginny obviously heard the thump and rattled on the door to get in. "Valerie, what was that? Are you alright?" She sounded panicked, her usually calm voice jumping an octave.
She muttered, "Alohomora." And the door flew open, revealing Valerie's slumped over body on the ground. Valerie was trembling and shaky, her head being cut in two by the splitting pain in her skull. "Oh Merlin, what's happening?" Ginny dropped to her knees next to Valerie, the water spilled onto the floor wetting the youngest Weasley's knees.Valerie just shook her head fiercely and covered her ear with her hands. "Can't-breathe." She rasped out before clutching her chest.
"What do I do?" Ginny asked while placing both hands on her shoulders.
Valerie's eyes flashed gold then back to silver. "Get--Fred." She breathed slowly, looking Ginny in the eyes desperately. It was happening again and her chest contracted. Her throat was tight and her eyes were watering. Ginny nodded and ran out of the bathroom, dashing as fast as she could out of the dorm and down the stairs. She didn't care that she'd stubbed her toe hard on the corner of her bed.
"Fred!" She screamed as she burst into the common room. The twins and Lee Jordan were talking on the couch before Fred's head snapped up. Ginny was breathing hard. She reached the three of them and by then they were standing up.
"Ginny, calm down." George out up his hands.
"Fred-" she gasped. "You need to come quick, it's Valerie." Fred's heart skipped a beat. He couldn't breathe. "She's having some sort of attack or something."He immediately knew what she was talking about. He said nothing; only ran as fast as he could up the girl's dorm stairs, not caring that it had turned into a slide. His heart was beating loud against his chest now. It didn't matter that they were fighting and not speaking, she needed him.
And little did he know that he needed her too.
