Chapter 2, Jacob Black
I sat in my car, glaring at the cell phone sitting on the passenger seat, willing for it to ring. Bella had been on her honeymoon with the leech for over a month. Who honeymoons that long? I had stopped by Charlie's every day for the last week, hoping he had heard something from her. Hoping that she was alive. That her heart was still beating. I grunted, and started the car. It was only 8, still early enough to go by Charlie's. I had been at work all day and hadn't checked in with him yet. I pulled up in front of their house, and the cruiser was in the driveway. I also noticed that the house across the street had lights on. I assumed they had finally sold the dump. It had been on the market, getting steadily cheaper for months. I walked up the steps and rang Charlie's bell. He came to the door quickly, still in uniform. Before I could even speak, he answered the same question I had been asking for a week.
''Nothing yet, bud. I'm sure everything is fine. Quit worrying so much. I'll call you as soon as they get back.'' Charlie patted my shoulder and looked slightly sad. My shoulders slumped and I nodded, knowing I was overreacting. I walked back toward my car, but suddenly felt like someone was watching me. I looked toward the newly occupied house across the street and saw the door close quickly. I stared for a second before dismissing it as a nosy old lady and climbed back into my car.
As I drove away, I couldn't stop thinking about whoever was watching me from across the street. It stuck in the back of my mind the whole way home to La Push. I stared at the ceiling of my bedroom, and couldn't shake the feeling that something was up with that house. I made a mental note to check it out more in the morning after patrol with Embry, Jared and Collin. There had been a vampire sighting on the treaty line into La Push two nights ago, so we were being extra cautious.
After finding nothing on patrol, I climbed into my car to go check in at Charlie's. I growled when I saw that the cruiser was gone, but I glanced in the direction of the nosy neighbor and spied a red haired girl out on the front porch knelt down with a hammer. She glanced up at me but I made a point to not look in her direction. I figured I could get a better look at her on my way back to the car, so, knowing no one was home, I walked up the steps and knocked on the door. I waited the polite amount of time before turning back around and looking into the most amazing set of emerald green eyes I had ever seen. Her perfect rose colored lips were pursed slightly, almost pouty. Her creamy pale vanilla skin was glistening from the moisture in the air. Her deep red, almost crimson hair was pulled back at the nape of her neck, but stray strands blew around her face in the mild wind. Suddenly it was like gravity shifted, and the only thing keeping me on this earth was her. It felt like a thousand steel bands suddenly twisted together and tied my soul to hers.
Her eyes followed me curiously, and then suddenly she was shouting every curse word known to man kind at the top of her lungs in the most alluring accent. She fell back onto her butt and pouted, sucking on her middle finger, and that's when I realized my imprint was in pain.
I ran up her old, rickety steps and took her hand in my own.
''Are you okay? Let me look at it.'' She jumped in surprise at my sudden appearance, but then shook her head defiantly. ''It might be broken, let me see.'' She shook her head again, and reminded me of a stubborn child. I couldn't help but smirk at the look on her wonderfully adorable face as I pulled her finger out of her mouth. I inspected it, and it seemed in tact. Probably bruised, but nothing life threatening.
''I'm fine, honey, really.'' she said and my heart started to sing at the melody of her voice. This had to be what imprinting was. But how could I imprint on her, when I was so in love with Bella? I sighed loudly and lowered my head.
''I'm so sorry you are disappointed at my lack of injury.'' she said, lowering her head to try and look into my face. A smirk played across her lips and I couldn't help but smile at her. ''I appreciate your concern, but I assure you, I'm fine. My apologies for the rude string of words that I shouted.'' She stood up and offered me her hand to help me to my feet. I stood, and took her hand afterward.
