Chapter 7, Amber Bauer
''What the hell are you doing here, leech?'' Jacob stepped in between me and Edward defensively.
''Merely warning an old friend of the dangers in the woods. Although I am surprised you haven't even thought to ask about Bella. Not even when Sam told you she was home.'' Edward had a strange look in his eyes. Like he was trying to hurt Jacob with his words. It made me angry.
''Where is she, leech? If you-''
''You know I wouldn't. I couldn't. But I don't feel now is the place to be discussing such matters.'' I saw him glance at me minutely, then roll his eyes.
''What's going on, Jacob?'' I asked, touching his arm. Edward gave Jacob a strange look before he shook his head and walked toward his car.
''We can meet tonight after the bonfire if you do desire, Jacob Black. It was lovely seeing you again, Amber. Alice certainly misses your company. Come see us soon.'' He was in his car and pulling down the road before I could think of what words were.
Jacob was at my side, trembling with anger. I turned to him, but he was staring at the ground, his fists clenched.
''Come inside, please, Jacob Black.'' I said with a smirk. He didn't return it, but he walked up my porch steps and stood facing away from me, in the direction of the policeman's house. I walked inside and Jacob followed. He still hadn't said anything. He paced my living room slowly, clenching and unclenching his fists. I sat on the couch slowly, unsure why he was so angry. ''Jake?'' I whispered, and he finally turned to me. His eyes were dark, angry. They softened slightly when he looked at me, but he was still scaring me.
''You want to explain this to me, Amber?'' he asked in a tight voice. My memory was still stuck on my ex husband, and I felt the fear well up in my throat. Memories of Matt being mad at me for one thing or another washed over me, and all I could muster out was ''I'm sorry...'' Jacob started pacing again.
''The lee- the Cullens are dangerous people, Amber. Why the hell would you be associating with them?'' Jacob's voice was getting steadily louder. He was still talking, but I could no longer hear the words. Matt's voice was screaming in my head. The night he broke both my thumbs because I got a phone call from a guy he didn't know was running through my mind.
''You just give your personal information to any old men now? My dick not good enough for you anymore, whore?'' I remembered vividly, Matt grabbing both my hands and snapping my thumbs backwards like they were twigs. I cried out in pain, then realized I had cried out in the present. Jacob was suddenly at my side. I could feel his warmth next to me, but I couldn't see him.
''I'm sorry, Matt. Please don't hurt me. I'll stay inside. You know I would never cheat on you, baby. Please don't hurt me again.'' I don't know how long I sat on the couch sobbing, Jacob rocking me back and forth and whispering to me. When I came back to reality, Jacob was still holding me, kissing my forehead, cheeks and jaw softly.
''I'm sorry, baby. I'm so sorry. I never meant to scare you. It's okay. I will never hurt you, and I will never let anyone else hurt you. I promise, okay? I'll keep you safe, I promise.'' I turned my head and kissed Jacob's lips softly. He smiled into the kiss, and pulled back to look at me.
''Jacob, I'm really s-'' He pressed his lips to mine again before I could finish.
''I shouldn't have blown up at you like that. I'm the one that is sorry. Are you okay?'' His eyes were bloodshot, and I realized I wasn't the only one who had been crying. I nodded and he kissed my forehead. I jumped up then, almost tripping over the coffee table.
''Your bonfire thing! Shit!'' I ran into my bedroom, pulling clothes off quickly. I stood in the bathroom in my bra and underwear, brushing my hair and teeth st the same time. Jacob walked around the corner, but stopped and turned around when he realized I wasn't dressed.
''Oh come on, Jacob Black, it's not like I'm naked.'' I said and rolled my eyes. He cleared his throat and walked back into the living room, but not before he glanced at me quickly one more time. He laughed nervously when I yelled ''Saw that!'' in a singsong voice.
I was dressed in black jeans and a red and black long sleeve sweater when I walked back into the living room to dig through a few boxes there to find my red and black strappy knee boots and pulled them on. Jacob smiled at me approvingly before walking me to his rabbit. I sighed.
''You don't like my car?'' He pouted slightly.
''It's just tiny. I'm used to my truck, I guess. You car is lovely, Jacob Black. Let's go.'' I climbed into the passenger seat and sighed, feeling like a cow off to slaughter. ''Throw me to the dogs. I'm wearing my favorite meat pants.'' Jacob laughed and started the car.
