Alex was only nine when our mother was murdered five years ago. We, my father and I, made him see a therapist, which he still sees for that same reason. He had been with her when she was killed and he'd been having trouble sleeping and dealing with the fact that she was gone and not coming back. It's like he can't get over her death, he blames it on himself that he couldn't protect her, he's always dreaming of what it would be like if she had never been murdered. He has no friends and I'm ashamed to tell people he's my brother all he does is stare off into space and imagine what she would look like and what she would be doing, and if someone says something about her he'll flip out right in the middle of class and I have to go and get him.
I'm Maiya, I'm sixteen years old and here we are once again, at the therapist, because of Alex. He had a break down in class because of a smart alack who just had to say something about our mom, and to make matters worse I had to drag him out of class and call our dad to come pick us up, I'm failing school because of my brother. The therapists name is Dr. Grace and she had to take time out of her busy schedule to see us once again. So here we are now you're all caught up, oh and our dad's name is James, and there now you're all caught up.
"OK Alex, why don't you tell me what happened?" asked Dr. Grace in a kind sweet voice. Alex started explaining, in full detail, what had happened, this would take awhile, or not.
"I was sitting in class trying to listen to Mrs. Jones's lecture when Beck started throwing paper at me to get my attention and when I finally looked at him he said 'what did your mom do this morning? Mine made me breakfast and lunch did yours? Oh wait she was killed five years ago and the murderer was never caught, oops sorry.' And that's when I lost it and I started to pound his face in, and I wish I had. Then Mrs. Jones called the principal and he called security and Maiya. That's when they came and pulled me off him, and then Maiya dragged me out of the classroom and brought me here."
"You forgot the part where you broke my wrist," I told him still crying. I couldn't figure out why my dad couldn't just go take me to the hospital all I had on my wrist was ice and I needed a cast and x-rays. "Dad, can you please just take me to the hospital?"
"I don't know," he replied "What if Alex needs me?"
"Then Dr. Grace can take care of him, but you have a daughter too and right now she needs you." I told him tears running down my face as I gave him puppy dog eyes.
"Take her to the hospital James. I can take care of Alex," Dr. Grace told him.
"Alright, let's go Maiya," He said helping me up, "We will be back as soon as we can."
As we drove to the hospital I finally broke down and started to cry. My wrist was broken and my brother did it, and it doesn't even seem like my dad cares about me at all. It seems like the only one he cares about is Alex. I need to take care of Alex, Alex needs help with his homework now, Alex doesn't want to eat that lets eat what he wants. I could run away and my dad probably still wouldn't notice me, it's always Alex, Alex, and more stinking Alex. Why can't it just be Maiya for a change? That would make me happy, that would make me feel better but no, it'll never be about me it'll always be about stupid Alex. I was going to run away but maybe give it a little time wait until my wrist is better and try talking to Alex and my dad. I'd also try talking to my friends and see what they think.
When we got to the hospital I was taken straight to an exam room and my doctor was called, Dr. Will Solstice. When he got there he examined my hand and the moment he touched it I screamed so loud the senior citizens across the street could hear me.
"OK your wrist is definitely broken but just to be safe I'd like to get some x-rays." Dr. Solstice said, "Follow me."
"OK," I said as I got up to go with him.
