Basement
"Seriously," I muttered it out as we found ourselves on the road once more, however this time, I was fairly certain we were on the motorway opposite of the one we were trying to get to.
That had to be the case since all the packed cars of the street were now gone. Either I was an dunce, or someone cleaned up the road.
"Eli..." Sophia whined, and I glanced where she was pointing, and saw a couple of the dead waddling towards us whilst Sophia clung onto my arm for dear life.
I shrugged her off, and took out my trench knife.
"I don't suppose you could give me directions," I mocked, feeling a smile tug at my lips as the dead man groaned while lunging in my direction. "You could have just said no." I mumbled, stabbing into its head.
I barely noticed the other come up behind me until Sophia screamed. My weapon was immediately knocked out of my hand when the dead man lunged me at me. I heard its groans next to my ear, forcing me to quickly turn around, immediately noticing that my knife had been knocked too far.
Momentarily, I liked to think I could avoid the thought, but I considered letting it feast on Sophia so I could escape. I could probably get away on my own, but I there was a chance I could be bit. A small, tiny chance.
Sophia was small. She couldn't run. If I died, she'd die shortly after. At least if she dies, someone would live.
Diana's face swayed my decision, and I tore my fingers through the man's throat while its hands attempted to rip through my stomach. My fingers pulled out its tongue, ripping through its skin easily thanks to the rot of its flesh.
I used a bit more strength to unhinge its jaw and kick its body to the ground. Blood dripped from my hands as its body snapped towards Sophia.
"E-Eli!" She shouted, and I narrowed my eyes, noticing the biters in between the trees heard her cries and more began to spill out from the forest.
"Shut the fuck up," I ordered, picking up my fallen trench knife and walking up to the broken dead man, using my heel to stomp into its head until it stopped clutching near Sophia's ankles.
She was crying by the time I was done and I sighed, grabbing my emporer's blade from her hands. It was my mistake for letting her carrying it.
I still flatly refused to use a gun so close to a herd. "Let's go. Don't scream next time or I might have to leave you here. Noise attracts them, luckily, these ones are slower than normal. We can outrun them...hell we can out walk them," I stated simply, placing my trench knife back into its scabbard.
"I'm sorry Eli," she whispered, rushing to catch up to me, as I calmly walked down the road. I could hear the dead flood from the streets, and picked up the pace. I noticed that if I went any faster, Sophia would never be able to keep up.
