Dad let out an annoyed sigh as Stiles and I watched him curiously.
"What, Dad?" I asked.
"Jackson Whittemore took everything he said about Isaac Lahey and his father fighting before he died back." Stiles and I looked at each other in surprise and alarm, our eyes widening. "As in, we no longer have a motive for Isaac killing his father, and so we no longer have any suspects, and we can't hold Isaac responsible for killing his father."
"So--you're letting him off?" Stiles nearly demanded.
"We're gonna have to."
Oh, damn.
We exchanged looks, and before Dad turned around again, we were running for the first class of the day that we had together, seeing Scott instantly, Stiles sitting behind him while I sat by Stiles. "Dude, we just talked to our dad--" Stiles started.
"Who just talked to Jackson," I added.
"And we've got really terrible, horrible--"
"Very, very bad news," I finished.
Scott faced us, gesturing to the seat two seats ahead of me. "I think I already know."
Isaac was sitting there. I could tell just by the back of his bushy little head.
How didn't we notice that when we ran in?
After class, we walked out together, Stiles saying, "All right, I only found one thing online called a kanima. It's a werejaguar from South America that goes after murderers."
"That thing was not a jaguar," Scott said.
"Yeah, and we're not exactly murderers," I said.
"Yeah, but you did see it kill somebody, which is probably why it tried to kill you. And is still trying to kill you and it probably won't stop until you're both dead."
Stiles and I both stopped walking, looking after him.
"You know, sometimes, I really begin to question this 'friendship'," I said bitterly, both of us starting to walk again to our next class.
I sat in front of Stiles while the bell rang, Jackson walking past us and siting behind Scott. "Hey, testicle left and right," he said, ignoring me completely. Nice. "What the hell is a kanima?"
My eyes widened, looking up, and I turned to face him with the same looks that Stiles and Scott had.
But we didn't get to say anything before Coach said, "All right, listen up. A quick warning before we begin our review. Some of you, like McCall, might want to start their own study groups, because tomorrow's midterm is so profoundly difficult--I'm not even sure I could pass it. Okay, I need a volunteer at the board to answer the first question. Who's got it, huh? Come on, let's go, buddy."
"Paralyzed from the neck down," Jackson said, and we turned back to him. "Do you have any idea what that feels like?"
Stiles gestured to him and me. "We're familiar with the sensation."
"Not the best feeling in the world, is it?" I asked.
Jackson ignored that, Scott saying, "Wait--why would Derek test you? Why would he think that it's you?"
"How should I know?" Jackson asked.
"Wait, do they think it's Lydia?" Stiles asked.
"I don't know, all I heard was her name and something about chemistry."
I hadn't noticed that Coach was standing next to me until he yelled, "Jackson! Do you have something you want to share with the rest of the class?"
