{ P A I N is a sign that you are still human ~unless you have a medical problem where you can't feel pain, but other than that you're human }.
The Winter Break was almost upon us and our last football game was only a couple days away. The College Playoffs. The semester exams where nearing, football practices where getting even more brutal, and it was getting colder, yet no snow came. What's the point of cold weather if there's no snow to throw in someone's face? Why did life hate me so much?
"Down!"
My face smacked the icy field so hard I would be picking frozen turf out of my cheeks for weeks.
"c'mon, get up! My grandma can move faster than you, God rest her soul," Shouted Coach. He was relentless. He was all Kobra Kai and no mercy. All of us popped backed up and shuffled our feet, the crunch of the iced turf was no match for the roar of blood pumping in my ears.
"Time!"
Thank goodness...
"Ladies...I mean..." Coach looked at me with a slight frown. "I just want to let you know that this is your last practice before the big game on Saturday. I have given you the time to relax and also study for your Exams. Remember, academics outweigh sports, but that doesn't mean I want to see any slacking. Understood?"
"Yes sir!" we shouted in unison. We knew the extent of the importance of the big game and exams. We were all scared.
"Back to the lockers. You smell." Coached made a dramatic hand waive in front of his nose. Some chuckled while others were still thinking about sports and academics. I see Logan walking and make sure I'm a good 50 feet away from him, almost like a restraining order. I wanted to scream and punch him in the face, but I knew he had every right to do what he did. I had left him, which is basically a split, not a break like Ross and Rachel, but a full on break up. Yet the naive side of me wants to say sorry and run back to him. Ugh, my brain is all twisted and the cold isn't helping.
"Want to catch dinner with me?"
I turn around so fast I think I have whiplash. Erik strolls up beside me, helmet swinging by his side. His wet hair looks good considering that its filled with sweat. He smiles and I realize that i had been staring. Blushing I turn away.
"Yeah sure. What time?" I hear myself say. Bruh, what are you doing, my inner voice says. Why my inner voice sounds like a dude is as confusing for me as for you. My head is swirling with thoughts. I don't know why I said yes, it was almost instinctive.
He smiles, his lips forming a huge grin.
"How about 8pm? So like in an hour." He says, almost timid. I smile at his child like demeanor.
"Yeah, I'll go wash up and change in my dorm." I start turning away from him, towards the exit while him towards the locker rooms.
Gosh what will I wear? My hair will probably be wet, so up or down or in a braid? It's cold so probably jeans and a sweater, right? But what if the place is fancy or like a hole in the wall? What if it's....He didn't even say the place..
"Wait, Erik!" I shout and try to ignore some of the guys turning around to me. Erik looks over his shoulder and makes a 180. He tilts his head like a dog, a very cute dog, I might say.
"Where?" I shout at him.
"What?" He shouts back.
"Where do you want to eat?" A sudden look of realization appears on his face.
"We the Pizza?" Its sounds almost like a question, like he didn't expect to get this far. I smile and nod. Gosh I must look like a maniac with my excessive grinning. Thats because you are one dude. I walk toward my dorm, the cold wind nipping at my nose. I nod at Carly, one of the dorm supervisors and walk up the steps because the elevator was still broken.
"Hey Kaitlin." I wave at her as I got over to my drawers. She spins around in her swivel chair and starts to interrogate me like some detective.
"Why are you smiling? What happened? " She fires question after question like Steve Harvey, just without the mustache. A smile starts to form as she connects the dots.
"Erik?!" She screams with laughter. She starts to spin faster in her chair. I laugh and throw a shirt at her which she easily deflects.
"You know me so well." I push past her to go to the bathroom, my bundle of clothes spilling over my grasp.
"Too well." She sing-songs as I shut the door.
"Hey, mister! I want details when you get back, alright?" She shouts from the other side of the closed door. I smile.
"Will do!"
The warm water thaws me out like a frozen chicken and for a moment I have time to think. Why, why would you say yes? Because you like him. Clearly, but you're not ready, not after what Logan did to you. I think you are. I don't think so. I think you are and stop denying it. I was losing the battle with my own inner voice. Darn me for being so persuasive.
After my shower, I brushed my hair and since it was already night, I decided to skip makeup.
"Alright Kaitlin, I'm going. Don't have too much fun studying!" I call over my shoulder as I shut the door. I don't even have to turn around to know she's rolling her eyes.
Looking at my phone, I don't even notice a figure heading my way until I collide with him, my phone dropping onto the payment in the process.
"Oof." I mutter.
"I am so sorry." Fred bends down and hands me my phone. (which isn't broken...praise).
"Fred? What are you doing out here?" I ask him, smiling at his bright red bow tie.
He looks startled, but it quickly turns into a grin.
"I am on my way to my dorm. You?"
"I'm going to a very, very late dinner." I laugh.
"By yourself or..." He asks. I give an awkward smile.
"No, with a friend." I look down at my watch and realize I've got 1 minute before 8.
"Hey I got to go, I'm going to be late, but we should totally hang out sometime." I start walking in We the Pizzas direction. I hear Fred call out one last question.
"Where you headed off too?"
"We the Pizza!" I shout back. With my back turned, I couldn't see the sly grin spread on Freds face.
Soooooooo it's been like 2 years and I just want to say sorry. To be honest I didn't know if I was going to continue. So it might be a while for the next chapter. Just a disclaimer, I changed her name to Brianna because the original name belonged to a friend and I forgot to ask her if I could use it. She would probably be fine with it, but just to avoid the awkwardness I changed it so don't be surprised. Again, so sorry for the super loooonnggg wait and thank you guys for sticking with me through my bad grammatical errors and wild tenses. Lots of Love.
