Shana leaned against the balcony's railing, the cloying scent of night-blooming jasmine overwhelming her.
"Steady, now." Owen grabbed her arm. "What's wrong?"
"Don't you smell that?"
"Smell what?"
She dropped to the ground, knees hugged to chest. "Nooooo!"
Owen crouched in front of her. "Is it your asthma?"
"First comes jasmine's scent," she sang. "Then comes Jasmine the Demoness."
"Demoness Jasmine? That's only an urban legend."
Shana's eyes flashed red. "Jasmine wants you to think that."
Terrified, Owen shuffled away from her.
Shana had just enough time to contemplate what a fine sacrifice Owen would make before Jasmine took control.
