A/N: Earth Angel by The Penguins. Nice song. Decided to make it the title because. Well, because go and listen to the song. It's fun to sing. Welp. Enjoy.
---Grace sighed as she set the final box on the floor. This was where she was going to be living from now on out. She walked over to the window and cringed. She was going to be living here with the dreary changeable Montana weather. Sunshine and hot weather one minute; blizzard the next. She glanced at the gray sky and down at the muddy ground. It was November. The weather might seem bad right now, but Grace remembered how disgusting it could get in March and April. One of the worst Easters she had ever had had happened here. Her mind flashes back to her mild allergic reaction to hay and having mud in crevices that should never see the light of day. Ugh.
Knock Knock Knock
"You decent in there, Grace?" came her Grandmother's voice.
She turned toward the door, "Yep. All clothed."
The door opened with a creak and her Grandmother Nora stepped in. She had a kindly face that was full of wrinkles and laugh lines. Her hair was a silver-white color and short. Her hazel eyes were gentle and seemed to be full of wisdom. From a distance, her Grandmother looked frail. Those who knew her knew how wrong that assumption would be. Her Grandmother had worked on a farm for most of her life and had the muscles and vigor to prove it. Even in her advanced age, you did not want to arm wrestle her Grandmother.
"How are you doing?" she asked.
"Fine," Grace said with a shrug and a forced smile.
Grandmother Nora's eyes twinkled in sympathy as she saw past Grace's mask to her true pain. Nora understood. She felt the same pain. The silver haired woman nodded sagely, "Would you like any help unpacking?"
She shook her head, "Naw. No thanks, Grandma."
Grandma Nora nodded, "I'll leave you to it then."
Then Grace was alone with her boxes of belongings. She had never felt the silence so potently before. Even at the funeral there had been noise. Whispers. Sympathetic platitudes to distract her.
Now.
Now she had nothing.
She collapsed to the floor with tears falling from her eyes.
She missed them.
