Grace rolled over in her bed. Her alarm was going off. It was annoying. She just wanted to sleep. For eternity. She wonder if her Grandma would allow her to stay home from school sick... She sighed. Likely not.
She rolled out of  her bed with a low groan just as there was a knock on her door.
"You up and at 'em, girly?" came her Grandmother's voice.
"Yeah, I'm up!" Grace called back, and as she heard her Grandmother's footsteps walking away, she muttered, "...against my will."
She made quick work of getting dressed and getting down to breakfast. Grace stepped into the kitchen just in time to have her Grandmother finish loading up a plate with eggs, bacon, and toast before she offered it to Grace.
Grace took the plate with a "thank you" and sat down at the large kitchen table. She grabbed at cup from the stack and filled it with the already out orange juice. She grabbed a fork from the pile and a napkin from the napkin holder and started to eat.
Grace wondered if it was some generational difference because Grandma Nora was always up before everyone else whenever they were over here. And while she was up, Grandma Nora was making breakfast for her family of hungry souls.
She felt a sharp pain in her chest as she thought of how family gatherings here would never be the same.
"So," Grandma sat down across from her with her own plate full of food, "I thought that I'd walk you to school today and make a habit of it."
Grace paused, not sure how to respond, "Sure?"
Her Grandmother continued to eat in quiet.
A question made an appearance in Grace's head that she asked out loud, "Why make a habit out of it?"
Grandma smiled knowingly, "Exercise is good for your emotional and physical health. I don't even need to know what it says in the studies. It's always be good old fashioned know how."
Grace couldn't help but smile at her Grandmother.
"Sure thing, Grandma."
They continued eating and getting ready for the day. Her first day of a new school. Her Grandmother's daily work at the local café.
She met her Grandmother at the door with her backpack.
"Ready?" her Grandmother asked.
She nodded and let out a shaky breath, "Sure."
