When Eveline finally put on her scrubs and ditched the empty coffee cup, she hurriedly got herself up towards the fourth floor by taking the stairs. Holding on to the bannister, she had a quick stop at the third floor. She faked a 'I am in wonderful shape'- smile towards a doctor who just bluntly ignored her. Her head was still pounding and her breath seemed heavy. Making an empty promise to now take the stairs every day, she continued her journey towards child care unit. This day couldn't end quickly enough.
The moment she stepped out, she noticed something different about the unit. Her colleagues seemed agitated, nervously shifting their eyes from one corridor to another. She noticed Janice, her head nurse, standing at the nursing station making sure the flowers in the hallway were looking good. The white roses didn't seem coordinated enough for her picky mind. Evee wondered if they ever had white roses in the unit and was even more surprised to see the shiny vase underneath it... Was that actual crystal? How would that vase even survive? If it wasn't for the children accidentally breaking it, it would be her. She made a point to herself that she would try not running that vase over. Even if that meant walking around it by approximately six feet.
Her thoughts came abruptly to an end when she felt someone pull on her arm, "Evee! You're late!" Chloe, her best friend at work spoke. In reply, Evee pulled her into a corner, out of the eyesight of her head nurse. The petite, pretty brunette flashed her dark eyes towards Eveline's bruised one.
"What happened to your eye?!" She shrieked, immediately being sushed by the blond.
"Yes I am late, please lower your voice. My head feels like someone's using it as a drum kit."
"You're having another hangover? It's the middle of the week!" Chloe was always the mother figure, she was a couple of months younger than Eveline but she was much more mature.
"Hey! I might come up with some migraine! So judgemental, sheesh. It's clear you have no faith in me whatsoever." Ever shrugged,
Chloe looked non impressed, "Is it a migraine?"
"No of course not." Evee shook her head. "Look, I was bored last night and the guys decided to take me out. I thought, well I don't have an early shift! I should take advantage of that. Have a little fun in life, it's good!"
"Indeed, you had the late shift, yet you are half an hour late. Those boys are a bad influence on you, I'm telling you. Not to mention your eye! Out of all the days, you decided today would be a good one to show up with a black eye! Janice will kill you!" She rambled. "How did you end up-"
Evee interrupted her, ignoring her grown up speech she heard a thousand times before. "Wait, are you... Why are you wearing so much make-up? And your hair... It's different." She took a strand of Chloe's long dark brown hair in her hand.
Immediately, her colleague started to blush, "Yes well, you know who's coming right? Might have a shot if I bat my eyes here and there. Peppermint? You could use one. Your breath smells like whiskey and coffee. " Chloe took out a box of peppermints out of her scrubs and handed one over.
The blonde nurse wanted to ask further questions because there was still no light bulb in her mind going on and off. Just darkness and a lot of noise. Oh wait, that's not in my mind. "EVELINE DELAMANE. YOU ARE LATE."
"Oh boy... Did she see me?" Evee whispered towards Chloe, hearing the loud voice behind her back.
"Of course she saw you... She just called your name. I have some Advil in my purse, I'll quickly fetch one with a glass of water." Chloe spoke with concern. "In the mean time... Good luck."
"Thanks." Evee responded, ignoring all the times she made fun of Chloe's overloaded purse. She kept a small grocery store inside of it. A few months ago, Evee forgot a pad for her monthly visitor of Mother Nature and Chloe could offer three different sizes. With or without wings.
"Eveline! Please explain!" Evee slowly turned around, facing the angry elder nurse.
"Well, my car broke down, not my car really, more my tire. I had a flat ti-"
"YOUR EYE!" Janice her eyes widened at the sight. "Oh my god, out of all the days! What happened?!"
"Yes..." Find an excuse, ANY excuse. "I fell against the corner of the table." Bad excuse, take it back, I repeat take it back. "I mean-I just fell. It's no big deal. It will be gone before you know it." The blonde spoke, hoping her head nurse wouldn't ask any further questions. She didn't really remember it anyways. It was still somewhat sore, but the pounding in her head was way worse than the pattern around her eye.
Janice didn't look convinced. "I hope everything is alright with you. You should've stayed home." Evee was surprised, Janice never advised to stay home. The floor was already understaffed as it was.
"Why? I'm perfectly capable of working with a bruised eye. It doesn't hurt. See." Evee used her finger to poke into the bruised area.
"Stop it! You'll make it worse! Just... Just stay clear out of everything today. If you see a crowd, avoid it. I have too many things going on right now that I can't take this as an extra."
The head nurse didn't wait around for a response and wanted to turn around when Evee stopped her, "Wait! I noticed a lot of commotion when I arrived, what's going on today?" Eveline still didn't understand, what was so special about today?
"I can't even believe you forgot. I told everyone in the general meeting two weeks ago that we would have royal visitors today. Be on your best if you would pass them by. They should be here any minute." The head nurse's eyes nervously turned towards the clock in the hallway.
"Wait-whoa whoa, what?!" Royalty?! Like British royalty? The nurse wasn't that familiar with them. She moved across the North Sea just two years ago. As a Belgian, she knew the Belgian throne quite well. The British one was different. Of course she knew Queen Elizabeth. She was the one who had the corgis. Those cute dogs. She also knew Princess Diana, she remembered her mom crying in front of the television when she was a little girl. Eveline knew she had two boys, if she remembered well, one had fiery red hair- Wait.
Oh no.
No. No. No.
This cannot be happening.
Was that him downstairs?
She couldn't remember a lot of her spastic drama show downstairs but she did remember not really being the happiest kid of the bunch...
Did she... Did she call him Ed Sheeran?
As she stared with a frightened expression at the white wall in front of her, she heard Janice speak. "Look no offense but maybe it's just best to stay out of the way. Make sure they don't see that black eye. It wouldn't look good."
Yes. That's exactly what Evee decided to do. She would make sure they didn't see that black eye. Or the rest of her face, for that matter.
She could be invisible if she wanted to be.
Of course.
