Don't Go

We ran across the field. I took a throwing knife out as we hid against the wall.

"There's a back door to your left, it will be locked. It uses fingerprints to unlock it. Go to it, I'll hack it," Arrow directed over the com. We tiptoed to it. A few seconds later the door clicked opened.

We all stepped in, making sure our footsteps didn't echo through the hallway.

"Don't go in yet, let me hack the cameras. It might take a while because there's so many," he explained.

A minute later he allowed us to keep going. We turned to the right. Two guards were guarding the door that we needed to go through.

I turned to Lindal. "Your part," I whispered to her. I stepped back to let her shoot. She brought out her stun gun. She took a deep breath and aimed the gun at the guards direction.

She pulled the trigger twice, sending two darts flying in the air. One hit a guard the the neck and the other embedded itself in the other guards chest.

She's one hell of a shot. She looked at us. I nodded for her to go. She walked to the door and opened it. We all stepped in through the doorway. It was a dark room, but a big, empty one.

We walked forward. Then the lights suddenly turned on. We all got ready. But there were only two people.

There was a silver staircase that led up high in the air. Dad was standing in front of it, looking at us with an unemotional expression. The stairs led up to a circular platform with a throne.

And sitting on the throne was- "Mom," I said, my eyes widened. "Y... You're dead! Dad- dad killed you! I saw him!"

"Sorry, sweetheart, but that was my giving you an illusion," she answered. I had forgotten how her voice sounded like. "That suit fits you, by the way. I would say it fits you better than it fits me."

"Is Ethan alive?!" I asked.

"No, he's not. He actually died. Your father isn't really a killer, so I made him do it."

"What do you mean he isn't the killer?!"

"I am, sweetie. Mind control, remember? I'm telepathic. What a superhero your father was!"

"Your dad was a superhero?!!" Lindal cried shrilly.

"I didn't know!" I said. "So you were controlling him the whole time? Dad was always the good guy?!! You were bad?!!!!"

"Telepathy does come in handy. But I wouldn't say bad is a good adjective for me. I would say... Immoral." As soon as she said that more than a dozen guards surrounded us.

Lindal cocked her guns as Alex and Brian collected their power. I looked at dad for help. He tilted his head to mom and then tapped his head. Then I realized she was still controlling him, he couldn't fight. The guards had knives, swords and more weapons. Dangerous. Bad. Very dangerous and bad.

I but my lip, thinking of a plan. The guards attacked and the action began.

"What the hell is going on there?!!" Arrow yelled over the com, he had heard everything. I tried not to kill the guards, only knock them out or make them hurt.

"We have a problem!" Brian said. Electricity crackled around him.

"A big one!!!" Lindal added.

"Find us a way to stop my mom!!!" I yelled as I threw two knives out. I ducked as one sliced. I did a backward roll and cut one guard's leg. I heard him cry out.

"Found it!!!" Arrow called over the com. "The throne! The throne is the answer! There's a gem at the top! Stab it with silver and it'll be destroyed!"

"How will sliver help?!!" Alex yelled, his hands on fire.

"Silver contains some kind of ingredient that is like acid to the gem! It's like the heart of your mom's telepathy! Stab it, kill it, kill telepathy! Aveline, your daggers are made of silver, get over there!!!" Arrow ordered.

I looked at my mother who was watching the seen with a sinister smile. I can't believe that was my mom. I shook my head. She's not my mom. Moms don't try to kill their child.

I fought my way through with the help of my friends. We managed to get through but was instantly stopped with a dozen more guards guarding the stairwell.

"We got this!" Alex said. "Go!!!" Then his voice changed into a whisper. "Be careful, ok?"

"Don't worry, Harper. I'll be fine," I assured. The guards advanced. We all ran at them, but I didn't intercept, instead, I flipped over them and landed in front of the stairwell. I ran up with three guards trailing behind me. I twisted around and pushed one off the side, leaving two still running.

I kept running. I reached the top to see my angry mother. She thrust her hand out and an invisible hand began to choke me. I rose into the air. I struggled against it as my throat gasped for air. I fumbled with my belt. I managed to pull one throwing knife out. I threw it. And just as I wanted it to, the handle hit her head and she crumpled to the ground, clutching her head from the impact.

I tripped on guard behind me, making him be the second one to fall off. The last guard saw what I did. He dropped his weapons and ran for his life. Good. I pulled out my dagger, aiming for the green glowing gem. I stabbed it. Light shine through the crack. I stabbed it again. More cracks began to appear.

"No! Stop!!!" My mom wailed. "STOP IT!!!!" But I stabbed it again. And this time, the gem fell to the ground in pieces. "YOU WRETCHED GIRL!!!!" I felt a sharp metal blade go right through my stomach. It was so sudden that I didn't feel it at first. Then it was pulled out. I touched the wound, blood staining my fingers.

"AVELINE!!!!" I heard someone yell. I staggered back.

Alex Harper
I ran up the staircase as fast as I could.  I reached the platform. I slammed my foot into Aveline's mom's skull. I was angry. More than angry. I kicked her so hard that she fell to the floor, out cold.

I ran to Aveline. I laid her down on my lap gently. I felt her heartbeat. It was slow. I bit my lip. "Ok, Aveline. Breath, just breath. You're gonna be alright."

She shook her head. "No, Alex, I'm not. Here." She reached to her neck and yanked off the dagger necklace I gave her. "Take it."

"N- no, Av. I gave it to you, keep it," I refused, trying not to cry.

"Why did you give it to me?" We both knew she already knew, but I told her.

"B- because I l- love you. I'll always love you. You gotta hang on, Aveline! You can't go!"

"I won't. I'll be in here, right at the core." She patted my chest. "I won't leave you, I'll never leave you."

"I can't live without you!" This time I could feel my eyes water. "I can't, Av! Just hang on!"

"You will live with me, Alex. If you live, I'll live inside you, inside side your heart. I won't go anywhere as long as you live."

"No! You gotta stay with me!" Tears were coming now. "You have to! I still owe you a second date!"

"Alex, I love you." She closed her eyes.

"Aveline! Aveline! No! Don't!! You can't!!" But I already knew she was gone. I shook her, hoping that she was still there. "Av! AV! No. No! NO!! Aveline! C'mon! No." I put my head on her's, rocking her as I cried.

Aveline is gone. The love of my life was gone. Gone forever.
