Lucy somberly boards the train and waves to the three men standing on the platform waving at her. Their eyes follow her through the train as she heads to an empty compartment in the self-proclaimed Slytherin area. She settles into the compartment and tucks her bag away before turning to the window. She waves again and a small smile crosses her face as the trio holds onto each other and pretends to sob. She rolls her eyes and blows a kiss as the train pulls away. She hadn't wanted to leave Lee and the Weasleys, but her education was important to her. She tears her gaze away from the window as the train rounds a corner and the platform disappears from sight. With a sigh she pulls a book down from her bag and starts to read. Hopefully this train ride will be more peaceful since she's free of her ex-fiancé. Draco Malfoy was the bane of her existence to begin with, but it got worse when her adoptive parents sold her off to his family for him to marry her. He became horribly abusive and tried to hand her over to the Dark Lord so she'd be forced to obey or face death. Finding her birth parents saved her from it all, leading to the arrest of her adoptive parents who'd kidnapped her and it freed her from the engagement to Malfoy. Along the way she fell truly, madly, and deeply in love with Fred Weasley, spending her summer at his home with Lee Jordan and George Weasley. She smiles as she remembers the twins kidnapping her on the train the year before and several times throughout the year after that. It's definitely going to be different this year without them.
A light tapping on the door draws her attention and she pulls back her curtain of dark hair to see who it is. A young girl with long strawberry blonde hair and hazel eyes looks down at Lucy and quietly asks if she can sit with her. Lucy nods and the girl slides the door shut and sits across from her. Lucy returns to her book until the girl breaks the silence.
"I'm Bethany Cronwell, first year."
"Lucille Binx, but call me Lucy." Lucy mutters.
"Weren't you in the papers a while back?"
Lucy raises an eyebrow. "I don't know for sure. I never read the papers."
"It was something about you being kidnapped as a child and bringing down a whole operation of kidnapping and selling kids."
"Oh. Yeah. I didn't know that made it into the papers, but yes that was me." She says with a shrug.
"Who did they try to marry you off to?" The girl asks with wide eyes.
The door opens and they both turn to look up at the fair haired intruder.
"Speak of the devil and he shall come... Screw off Malfoy." Lucy spits as the boy sits next to her.
"Everywhere else is full." He shoots back.
"Tell your little friends to move over and let you in because so help me I will hex you into oblivion in front of this girl."
Bethany holds back a giggle that turns into a quiet snort while Draco smirks at Lucy.
"Come on, live a little. Get that stick out of your-"
"Get your hand off of me. Now. And get out." She growls.
"So feisty, still love it Luce." He winks at her and stands up.
Lucy brings her foot up to literally kick him out the door before slamming it with a resounding thud.
"That's who I was engaged to." She says, turning to Bethany.
"Shame. He's cute but a total tool."
They laugh and begin to talk lightly.
When the train arrives at its destination, Lucy parts ways with Bethany so she could find a carriage and Bethany could board a boat. Her carriage is quickly filled by Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, and Ginny Weasley. Ginny warmed up to Lucy after she'd discovered the truth behind what had happened, something Lucy was grateful for. They talk as a group about what they think is going to happen in the year to come and how many products from the shop are going to be set off. The sight of the castle is still as mesmerizing as it was the first time Lucy saw it, bringing a small smile to her face.
From her old spot at the Slytherin, Lucy glances over to the doors to watch the first years enter. Most look amazed or terrified, save for Bethany who looks like she'd rather sleep. Bethany's eyes scan the tables until they land on Lucy at the Slytherin table. She waves slightly and Lucy nods back, mouthing 'good luck' to her as they all stop before McGonnagol and the Sorting Hat. The hat sings its song before the professor begins her list, sorting children into their new houses. Bethany's name quickly approaches and the girl sits nervously while the hat rambles off inside her head. Finally after a minute or two, it shouts 'Slytherin' and Bethany grins broadly before hurrying over to sit next to Lucy. They smile at each other and Lucy gets a warm feeling in her stomach at the thought of a friend to help her survive the next two years without the twins. The warm feeling disappears when Dumbledore announces Snape's movement to the Defense Against the Dark Arts position and a newcomer will take his place for Potions. Lucy had never quite gotten along with Snape, earning several detentions and glares throughout the years. He never dared take House points away because she was in his house however. The feast begins and the girls eat while Lucy gives Bethany a rundown on Hogwarts.
After the girls finish eating, Lucy bothers Draco until he gives them the password and they slip out of the Great Hall and down to the Dungeons to relax. Bethany gives the common room an approving look before they change out of their robes and into something comfortable. They settle in front of the fire and Lucy looks over at the girl to ask a question.
"So, you know the surface of my background, what's your story?"
"Typical middle class family, pureblood status but not elitists. My parents are still together and there are 8 younger siblings, I'm the oldest. 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Emily and Drew are 8, Elizabeth is 6, Caroline is 5, Blake is 4, Tyler and James are 3, and Arianna is 2." She ticks off the names on her fingers as she goes to be sure she counted them all.
"That sounds like the Weasley family, 6 boys and one girl. I'm truly an only child, but while living with the Addams, at one point I had 5 siblings until they were slowly married off and I never saw them again."
"I can't imagine going through what you did. I would've given up and probably died or turned into a living zombie." Bethany shudders.
Lucy winces at the last part before sighing. "I did give up for a while and I did become like a zombie. I didn't eat, sleep, speak, or do anything without Malfoy leading the way. It was pathetic."
The door opens and people file in being led by Pansy and Malfoy. The duo quickly abandon their posts as Prefects and he shoo's the clingy girl away before climbing the stairs to his dormitory without a second glance.
