It was a sudden change. Like a faucet you didn't really care about running out of water and then realizing it was your last source of fluid.
That's what happened when Gavin Lucas shut everyone out.
I didn't realize not seeing him talking to everyone, giving out high fives and pats on the back and bro hugs would affect me this much but yet here I was, staring at him as he gathered his books wordlessly and not give anything a second glance. I was used to Gavin being the crowd pleaser, a ray of sunshine and all other things bright and happy but he couldn't be anymore opposite than what he had been for the last two weeks.
"Earth to Ingrid."
I blinked at the waving hand in my peripheral vision and turned to the source of the sound. Maki Ryou, my best friend since sixth grade, had her already narrow green eyes narrowed even more as she scrutinized me and followed the line of vision I had a second ago. She smirked as she saw Gavin before he scurried away like a frightened animal to class.
"Listen, I know you've been crushing on him since freshmen year and all that," she said, her voice sounding silky as rose petals like it usually did, "but the freshman method of staring at him till he realize that you're interested still won't work."
Heat rushed to my cheeks and I shook my head. "It's not that," I said, "I'm just not used to him not being friendly and bright."
"Maybe he's taking his break up with Natalie hard."
"But still," I said, protesting softly, "I don't think it should affect his personality this much."
Maki giggled. "Maybe it's because you ogling him seems more obvious now that everyone's attention isn't on him."
I sighed. "Forget it," I said, "I'm heading to Chemistry. See you later Maki." I waved at her and she patted my shoulder with an amused smile. Putting in my headphones, I walked down the halls, burying my hands in the pockets of my hoodie. Halfway through, I looked up and my eyes caught a glimpse of Natalie Gordon animatedly laughing to something her friend told her as they gathered by her locker.
Natalie Gordon was one of the most popular people in school. She was born with straight blonde hair that she had been dyeing since eight grade. At the moment, she was a senior and was sporting the new 'bronde' trend. I had to admit it suited her slightly tanned skin. She had the most enviable pair of breasts and legs in the student body and her personality was eccentric to anyone around her. I wasn't insecure of her till Gavin started dating her just as spring break was over in sophomore year. That was only a few months ago and I could still remember the bitterness clouding me over when I saw them holding hands. Not that I wasn't surprised. Gavin got a huge growth spurt when he returned that same year, helping him gain a place in the basketball varsity team, and had an apparent life-altering haircut. He wasn't just dorky, happy-go lucky Gavin anymore, he was hot, dorky, happy-go-lucky Gavin. A hot older girl taking interest in him was as shocking as bees getting attracted to honey.
And I know it was childish and stupid to claim that I saw him first before everyone started wanting him because, sadly, high school didn't work well with dibs.
They were cute as a couple. Always smiling, holding hands, PDA that made me want to bury myself underground no matter how much I reasoned it was just a crush.
Everyone was shocked when they broke up. I was one of the first to find out about it since Gavin's sudden change of personality concerned me and I took the liberty in finding out the reason why. Natalie was quiet and indifferent the first day I found out but after two days she went back to being the beloved Natalie Gordon.
