~The next morning~

I woke to my phone buzzing. 23 texts and 6 missed calls. All from my dad. I groaned, rolling out of Maddie's bed. She was still out cold. No wonder; It was 5:16 AM.

I tip toed into the bathroom. Last night, Maddie had told me it was okay to shower, but I'd said I probably wouldnt need to unless we went swimming. Now, just the image of my father's rage and my punishment made my skin crawl. So I locked the door and stood under the cold water (I didn't want to use all of their hot water.) When I'd taken as long as I could and was chilled to the bone, I stepped out and wrapped in a towel. My phone buzzed again and I noticed I had at least 4 more texts, 3 more missed calls, and 1 voicemail. I opened it.

"Kalina Rose Fairchild, where the hell are you?!?! Did I give you permission to leave the house?!?! No, I didn't! Oh, just you see, Miss Priss, you'll see how much trouble you're in! Call me or it'll be worse!" My father's recorded voice deafening as he screamed in a drunken rage. I decided to call him back.
"Kalina?!" He gargled.
"H-hi, Daddy." I flinched at the name. It left a bitter taste in my mouth.
"Don't Daddy me, bitch. Where have you been? I've called you since I got home last night." He gargled again. I heard the sound of him take a swig from his bottle.
"I-im sorry. I'm at a friend's house--"
"Don't go telling any of those stupid friends of yours about Sidney, you here? You'll have another thing coming."
"Yes, sir."
Sidney is my dad's girlfriend. She sometimes helped him punish me when he thinks I've been bad. Other times she watched. She made me sick.
"When are you coming home?"
"Tomorrow, sir." I answered weakly. He growled.
"Okay."
"Goodbye, Daddy."
"Uhuh. Dont think you won't be getting punished."
"But dad--"
" I told you not to call me Dad! I am not old enough to be a 'dad'!"
"Y-yes sir. Sorry sir."
"Whatever. Just dont be late tomorrow. You have school in the morning." He snapped, hanging up.
I hung my head. I walked out slowly, rubbing my hair with a towel.
"Are you okay?" I jumped at the sound of Maddie's voice.
"Oh... You heard that?" I asked.
"Yeah. Your dad doesnt sound very kind." My eyes widened in fear.
"How much did you hear?"
"Just muffled yelling. You sounded upset." I shrugged, throwing my phone in my bag.
"I guess. He just doesnt like me leaving the house. Ever."
"Im sorry. At least he gives you access to internet." She was obviously trying to cheer me up.
"Well a girl's got to do something while she's locked up in the house." I sat down next to her on the bed, laughing a little. She laughed quietly.
"Hey lets go swimming."
"Oh ok. I guess I'll take another shower afterward."
"Oh yeah, sorry. We dont have to--"
"No, its fine. Sounds fun. I'll let you get dressed in here and I'll get dressed in the bathroom." She smiled and agreed. Just before I left the room, she called out.
"Nice towel by the way." I blushed. I'd forgotten I was only in a towel. She giggled and it sent chills down my spine.

'Oh lord... I live next to this impossible beauty.' I thought.
