Prologue

The door opened very slowly and Daniel looked up to see who it was.

“Martha, what are you doing here?” He asked carefully, obviously surprised to see the lady he almost married standing in front of him in his office.

“Still the same old Daniel, blunt, and straight to the point. It’s nice to see you haven’t changed, but don’t I deserve a seat and perharps even a cup of coffee or tea?” Martha asked smoothly as she slowly settled in a chair facing Daniel.

“I don’t have time for frivolities Martha, what do you want?” Daniel asked again but Martha merely smiled, she was obviously not in a hurry to get things done with.

“Oh, well, I came by to congratulate you on your wedding since I couldn’t make it to the ceremony, thanks to you.” She said with every word dripping with sarcasm.

“Thank you very much for caring to congratulate me, now if you don’t mind, I’m very busy as you can see.”

“In a hurry now? Relax Daniel, I’m not here to ruin your perfect marriage. We had a nice thing going on, but it’s quite unfortunate it ended, and I believe I have something of yours.” Martha said as she opened her purse and brought out what looked like anengagement ring which she placed on the table.

“I really like it, but I can’t keep it anymore, not if I want to move on like you have.” She said and stood up slowly to leave.

“There’s one more thing you should know Daniel.” She said as she reached the door.

 “What?”

“She’s pretty, and she has your eyes.” Martha finished and walked out before David could say anything and as the latter watched her leave, he silently hoped he would never see her again...
