“Hey, good morning.” Michael says as he makes his way to his own part of the slab. We have chemistry practical and he is my lab partner which is a very good thing since he is actually quiet intelligent. Nosa had to share his slab with Mona and I can see the disappointment on his face as he waves at me from the other end of the lab.
“Morning. How was your night?” I ask as I pass him the report of the assignment our teacher had given us the previous day. We were to study the life cycle of a butterfly and write a full detailed report of our observations. It was sort of a group thing; you and your partner but Michael and I decided to do it separately and draw a final report from our reports. He looks at it briefly and nods his head.
“Not bad really but I’m not surprised though, it’s totally what I expected from you.” He says as he reaches for his bag and brings out his own report which he stretches towards me.
“Here is mine. You should read through.”
“Don’t worry about it; I’m sure we can’t get less than an A.” I say as I wave my hand dismissively.
“Okay, so how do we draft the final report?”
“We can meet up in class after school it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.” I reply as I glance towards Mona’s direction, I don’t like the way she’s staring at me.
“I really don’t know what to do with her, she’s like my shadow.” Michael says as his gaze slowly follows mine.
“That’s pretty much expected, since she’s your girlfriend.”
“I don’t know, she’s more like a pest than a girlfriend.” He says with an irritated voice just as our teacher walks into the lab. I smile gratefully as he orders us to bring out our textbooks. He came in just in time, I didn’t know what reply to give Michael for the last statement he made…what do you say to a guy that calls his girlfriend a pest?
*******
“Thanks, I really appreciate this.” Nosa says as he places the diet coke he just got for the two of us on the table.
“Diet coke? I really don’t think it’s a good idea, for me.” I say with a smile, I don’t have any weight to lose.
“Oh, I apologize; do you want me to change it?”
“No, it’s okay, it can’t kill me.” I say with a smile and Nosa takes his seat.
“So, what’s your deal with Michael? Mona’s really pissed off with the idea of you two being slab partners and she won’t stop glancing at you two and making comments.”
“Glancing? Mona doesn’t glance, she stares.” I say with a snicker and Nosa chuckles.
“Very true, I was just trying to be modest. What’s it with you and Mona anyway? The way she talks about you, it’s like she has a really personal issue with you.”
“Nothing is more personal to Mona than her love life. It all comes down to Michael, trust me.” I say as I concentrate on my rolls. I don’t like telling lies, but there’s no way I’m going to let Nosa in on my mom’s affair with Mona’s dad.
“The rolls are really good; your mom’s a great cook.” Nosa says and I smile, partly because of the compliment and partly because he is changing the topic.
