I walk over to the door and quickly walk in. It is raining heavily and I'm soaked and dripping already. As I drop my bag behind the door and make my way to the bathroom I silently pray my books aren't wet. I quickly change my clothes and walk into the kitchen just as my mom calls my name.

"Hi mom." I say as I walk over to the fridge to grab a coke.

"Hey hon, I was starting to wonder if you weren't the one that came in. I'm sorry I couldn't come to pick you, you know how I get when I go out in the rain." Mom says apologetically, she is dicing onions to use for dinner and her eyes are watery.

"It's okay mom, I didn't really get wet, I took a taxi." I lie to make her feel better and she smiles.

"You know I love you, right?" she asks softly.

"I know you love me more than anything in this world and I love you too mom, now hurry and make dinner, I'm starving." I reply quickly, walking out of the kitchen almost immediately to avoid another sorrowful mother-daughter talk.

My mom and I used to be not so close to each other as I was closer to my dad than I was to her, but dad's death sort of brought us closer together and now we are like two peas in a pod; always saying how much we love each other and having this mother-daughter conversation that leaves either of us in tears. I just clocked sixteen a week ago and I've decided I'm done with all the emotional outbursts...

"So sweetie, how was school today?" Mom asks as she walks to the dining section with empty plates in her hands. I watch her set the table and realise she's setting a table for four.

"School was good, are we having company?" I ask curiously and she gives me a small smile.

"Yes we are, Steve is coming over with his daughter tonight for dinner, he particularly wants to meet you."

"And you were planning to tell me when?" I ask curtly.

"I'm sorry hon, I didn't mean to-"

"Well, how about this; I'm not in the mood to meet anyone tonight mom, especially not Steve and his daughter, what's her name again?" I ask sarcastically as I pick up my i-pod and angrily make my way out of the house. It has stopped raining but the weather is quite cold...and I'm only wearing a tank top and shorts, not exactly the right outfit.

The moment I step out of the house and the cold breeze prickles my skin like torns, I regret my actions; partly because I made my mom feel bad and then because I neither have a coat nor a sweater. Nevertheless, I slowly make my way down the walkway into the street. I'm not planning on going far though, I'll just stay within the estate we live in.

Four houses away from my house, a cat runs up to me from nowhere and I gently pick it up, it isn't cold nor starved, so I figure it's owner is somewhere around the corner.

"Hey you naughty cat." I hear a voice say and I look up to see who it is.

"Hi, sorry about that, she's quite naughty." He says as he stretched his hands to collect the cat from me.

"It's okay, I love pets, what's her name?" I ask without making any attempt to hand him the cat.

"Fizzy. Her name's Fizzy." He replies slowly.

"And I don't think I've seen you before..." I say carefully.

"Oh, well um, my name is Michael and I actually attend the same school as you, so it's sort of funny you don't know me." He says with a pale smile and I can't help but laugh. The most popular senior student in my high school actually thinks I don't know him.
