“Mom, I need to get a textbook at the bookstore, I’ll be back soon!” I announce as I slip on my sandals and walk out of the house without waiting for my mom to reply. The book store is just outside the estate so I don’t need to go very far. As I walk out of the estate into a major street, I see Mona’s two friends walking towards the bookstore and I follow them closely, they must have come to visit Mona since none of them lives near my estate, but if they are hear to see Mona, then where’s Mona herself? As I walk over to a section to check for the book I need, I over hear them talking; they were talking about Mona.
“I think she steals all that money from her dad, I hear they are not very rich though. She just comes to school and pretends like she’s royalty.” Lara says and Sarah nods in agreement. Gossips, they are not even trying to stay quiet. I say to myself, I don’t have to move closer to hear what they are saying.
“I hope Michael ditches her soon, she won’t even let any other girl get close to him, it’s not like they are even going to marry in future or something.” Sarah says.
“Marry? Who’s ever going to consider having a slut like Mona for a wife?” Lara says again and I frown, Mona and I are not friends, but even I know she’s not a slut. I’m about to mind my business and pretend I can’t hear anything they are saying when I hear a voice behind me. It’s Mona, and it looks like she heard everything Lara and Sarah said about her. The two girls look at each other with a bewildered look in their eyes as Mona gives them dirty looks and hurries out of the store. I hesitantly run after her. Mona might be cruel and self centred but seeing the kind of friends she has, I feel more sorry for her than I hate her and I quickly follow her to the varandah to console her. She is sitting in a plastic chair and her head is buried in her palms.
“You don’t have to worry about that, you are ice queen remember? No matter how hard they try, they can never be you.” I say softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. Mona looks up at me for a minute and smiles thinly.
“Well, look who’s here. I hope you are not trying to stop me from picking on you and your friend in school.”
“You won’t stop, will you?”
“I guess not.”
“I wasn’t hoping you would anyway, let’s just say I’m doing this for your dad.”
“Aww, doing things for our parents now, are we?” Mona asks sarcastically and I smile, she’s definitely back to her normal self.
“It’s good to have you back, now if you’ll excuse me, I have a book to buy.” I say sweetly and start to walk back into the store.
“You know what? I think I’ll take a break from picking on you and your little friend, it’s tiring anyway.” She says with a smile and I nod at her before walking away, I hear her say “You are welcome” just as I open the door to go into the store. I don’t know what just happened between me and Mona, but I’m really glad she’ll be staying out of my hair and Halima’s for sometime.

Martha walked into the sitting room and switched on the television.
“So, can I offer you anything?” She asks with a smile and Steve shakes his head.
“No, at least not yet,I’m here for a more important issue.” He says carefully.
“An important issue? And what can that be?” Martha asks as she sits down slowly.
