The moment I was born my parents looked at a black swirling mark high up on my neck. It was the symbol of thunder. So they named me Indira meaning 'the thunder'. But this mark worried them greatly for only your true partner had the exact same tattoo and the one who had the match for mine was a boy born to the pure blood vampires. Of course I didn't know this at the time, no one did but my parents for they had seen the boy before and his tattoo. So to protect me they covered up part of it, the bottom linked swirl to be precise. We live in a world where our lives are decided by our tattoos we were born with. My parents share the storm tattoo and my older brother bares the emblem for lightning, so I guess its only fitting that I ended up with thunder. Even if it is masked by their spell and even if i have never seen it.
The doctor came in and recorded my mark, he knew what it was for he was the one to deliver me. I looked into his warm brown eyes and he stared back at me, a smaller than average hazel eyed newborn baby girl. His eyes held concern for what may befall later in life.
"It would be wise to keep part of it covered up so it looks like an unknown tattoo" advised the doctor examining the job my parents had done and nodding with approval. Everything was new to me but the sound of my mothers voice. The day they brought me home I met Blazer my brother, older by six years, he was waiting to meet his new sister. I clutched mums shirt as we entered the door , yet another new place to explore and learn. I couldn't tell them how excited I was to know this was my family. I giggled with delight when Blazer said hello to me for the first time.
But that was seventeen years ago now and I still don't know the significance of my tattoo or name sake. They wouldn't tell me no one will, my parents swore to secrecy to never reveal the true nature of my mark, everyone believes it is an unknown and unnamed tattoo which is supposed to be safer for me. I never thought about it much because many never find their match and end up with some one else instead so i guess that would include me. I sit in English class staring at my paper, my shoulder length red-gold hair forms a curtain around my face. Marlene taps the top of my head,
"its time to go home you silly goose". I quickly pack up my things and follow her out. Marlene was my best and only friend, we had met down by the creek at the back of my house when we were little. We had been best friends ever since. Her tattoo was the song bird and strangely enough my younger brother Hawk had the song bird so they were to be together in the near future. We walked through the tall grass of the paddock picking the seeds from to tops as we went.
"So will you ever find out what your tattoo is?" she asked nudging me in the ribs with her elbow.
" I don't know maybe; Mr Duran has never seen anything like it no one has, they say the closest thing to it is the thunder but according to my parents thunder is dangerous" I replied jabbing her back.
"you bet it is thunder has only ever been recorded once in all of history and they died a horrible way" stated Marlene leaning in for another attack.
"well so they say" I retorted tackling her to the ground before she had the chance to execute her next move. We broke apart in hysterics we laughed so hard we cried. For the next half hour we laid on our backs and looked at the clouds. But we were interrupted by Jane the school bully.
"look who we have here, goodie two shoes and the ugly duckling, the one who doesn't belong" she taunted kicking me in the ribs. I tried to get up and away but Jane was three times my size to be honest most people were bigger than me.
"Where are you going little duck" she scorned punching my stomach. Pain spread through me like fire and Marlene was no different, she also got beaten. Jane continued to bash me while Molly and Terrance held Marlene back to watch. Jane kicked sand in my eyes so now all I could see was shadows. I cried out for help and to my relief there was an answer but not from the person anyone wanted to go near. It was the voice of a vampire and she had friends. They came swift as the wind and without any effort pulled the enraged but now scared Jane off me. The vampire who had answered me headed all three of the bullies off while the remanning five shadows stood above us. They may be vampires but vampires hate Smog bloods which is what Jane was, she was a quarter cast of a distinguished aggressive line.
"Are you two alright?" questioned one boy who I couldn't see for my eyes were full of gritty sand. Marlene sat up and crawled over to where I lay curled up my hands over my face
"Its ok Indira she's gone" she reassured me, patting my shoulder. The girl came back and crouched down next to me
"your that girl who Jane constantly targets aren't you?" she questioned, I nodded with out taking my hands away.
"Indira can you see?" Marlene asked in a worry
"no I can't there's sand in my eyes" I answered.
"ok then I'll take you home" she said thanking the vampires and guiding me along the barely visible trail in the grass.By the time I had cleared my eyes we were almost home Marlene smiled at me
"you know the boy who asked if you were ok was that pure blood vampire who goes to our school" she sang
"there is more then one pure blood at our school" I retorted sounding more defensive than intended,
"yes but it was the one who looks at you quite often, and watches you in gym class" she teased
"yeah probably planning the best way to drain my blood" I said playfully back.
"ha ha probably" she agreed.
"well see you tomorrow then" she said giving me a hug ( I held back a wince of pain) and walked on toward her own home. I limped down the rocky drive way holding my injured arm close to my body. I opened the door to find Blazer standing in the hall way waiting.
"mum and dad aren't home yet Indi" he said to me coming forward to help me through the doorway,
"Jane again I see" he asked examining a deep purple bruise which had already appeared on my jaw line,
" Yeh her, Molly and Terrance" I explained " and I think my arm might be broken this time" I continued. I felt so embarrassed because my brother was crowned champion in the seniors wrestling tournament this year, and me well I keep getting beat up.
"Yep its broken alright, its the first time she has broken anything though" he concluded after touching my arm and receiving an ear piercing scream in return. Once my arm was set in plaster and secured in a sling, Blazer helped me clean up the rest of my wounds.
"Don't let her sneak up you like that again and maybe you will get away unhurt" he advised, packing away the first aid kit and putting all the bloody rags, cotton balls in the bin. I slid down from the bathroom bench and slowly made my way down the hall to the navy blue carpeted stairs. It took me quite a while to ascend the three flights to my bedroom. I lay on my bed staring at the ceiling my slinged arm rest across my chest.
"why me, why does she target me?" I whispered to myself. The covers felt so soft and warm beneath my trembling right hand , my eye lids became heavy I was exhausted I slipped off into a deep terrifying nightmare filled sleep. I dreamt that Jane came for me her teeth were filed to a razor sharp point, from her fingers protruded curved talons, her skin was scaly, her eyes slitted and from her mouth flicked a forked tongue coated in poison. Blood dripped from her lips I tried to run but it was one of those dreams where your legs are moving but you aren't going anywhere. I woke screaming covered in sweat and thrashing around despite my injuries. Mum and dad came running in, I hadn't seen them since this morning, Blazer had told them not to disturb me, so they had not come in to see me.
"Indi what is it baby, are you ok?' mum fussed cupping my face in her hands,
"it was just a nightmare thank god" I spoke to myself.
"oh she really did hurt you this time " dad sternly said
"yes but there is nothing we can do about it" I replied letting them hug me tightly.
"I wish there was though, I wish there was" Blazer stated sitting on the end of the bed. Once they were sure that I had calmed down they left me in silence. I straightened my sling and tried to go back to sleep but it was no good she kept floating back into my mind.
"Great not only does she haunt me by day but now by night too" I spoke into the darkness of my room . Slowly night turned into early morning.
