Chapter 7
(Can I Keep her?)
Jarrod’s point of view
I kept Star close to me as we arrived at the pack house. Not everyone was accepting of humans, though admittedly, I was probably the worst about it. I couldn’t have been more pleased with Star or her ability to win over others. She’d been quick to offer us to drop her off somewhere else or be blind folded so she wouldn’t know the location of the pack house; it had impressed Grant to no end. In the end, he had declined saying that if it had not been for her he’d have lost one of his best wolves, me.
Star smiled at the amount of nature surrounding the large, spread-out two story beige house. As we entered, a thought entered my head, ‘Is my room clean?’ Normally, I kept things neat, but…I’d been in a hurry when I left and couldn’t remember.
“Grant, you….” Lydia fell silent at the sight and smell of the human woman at my side. She immediately looked at Grant questioningly.
“Gather everyone into the game room.” Lydia gave a nod and walked away. Looking at me, my Alpha said, “Take Star to into the game room.” I nodded and led her down the hall.
We reached the other side of the house and I led her into the room and over to a small couch near the fireplace. Grant always gave orders by the fireplace and I wanted to make sure Star could see and hear everything.
“I didn’t mean to become a problem,” She said barely above a whisper.
I turned her head to look at me. “You’re not.” The urge to kiss her washed over me; hearing footsteps however stopped me. I released her, but stayed seated next to her on the couch.
Several pack members entered the room and began claiming places to sit or stand. I couldn’t help but feel amused by their wariness of the woman seated next to me. ‘idiots,’ I thought to myself. Soon the room was packed and Grant took his normal position in front of the fireplace.
“Settle down,” Grant ordered, hushing the whispers about both the woman next to me and my being alive. Gesturing to Star, he said, “Everyone this is Star. She’s the reason Jarrod is alive. I know a lot of you are surprised, but we needed to keep Jarrod alive and keep him from where he was being learned by others. There is a traitor in the pack. Star was attacked when we went to get Jarrod tonight; that’s why she’s here.”
“I did offer to go elsewhere,” Star reminded my alpha.
“You’re awfully considerate for a human,” Bobby commented. I glared at him less than approvingly. “I don’t mean anything against her Jarrod, but most humans aren’t this considerate of our kind. Hell, I’m still trying to figure out how she knew you weren’t human.”
“Jarrod didn’t tell you?” Lydia questioned, brushing a long piece of pale blonde hair behind her ear.
“No, he was unconscious when I found him,” Star replied.
“We’re not the first shifters you’ve come across are we?” Tye inquired.
I sensed a feeling of sadness wash over her as she shook her head no. Curiosity took over. “How do you…”
“My brother,” she replied. “He was attacked years ago and was turned.”
“Your parents couldn’t handle it, could they?” Mira remarked, sounding amused.
Star narrowed her eyes at the wolf. “No, his Alpha refused to allow him to have contact with us because we were human!” She snapped at her. “I haven’t seen him in five years since we had secretly met. His alpha got mad and beat the hell out of him for it.”
