In SciFi, there tends to be a whole lot of characters with a whole lot of back stories. A way to not confuse the reader is make sure there are a few PRIMARY characters which most of the plot revolves around, and then some SECONDARY characters which occasionally appear and do something to move the plot along. If your secondary characters has a specific occupation then remind the reader whenever that character appears.
Say that one of your characters is called Jake and he's a baker, whenever he comes up just say:
Jake, the young baker who lived miles away, appeared from out of nowhere...
This just reminds your reader of who the character are because unlike you, the writer, they may forget easily.
