I've already spoken about pacing in this book, but there is one thing that I didn't really cover in that chapter which is not rushing things. I understand if you want to start things with some drama but don't rush into the main body of the story, otherwise you'll find yourself at the climax of the whole story within a few chapters.
Take time to describe, build up characters and create suspense and then when you feel that the plot is ready- strike with the climax of the story. SciFi stories never really go straight to the action from the minute the reader opens the first page; sure they may start with action but the REAL action/adventure happens later on. So pace yourself, don't rush the chapters and plot to get to the 'exciting bit'.
