"Later Mom! Alex!"

Fate waved as her mother and brother waved goodbye to her. She was going on her first mission. Oh, let me clarify. Her first solo mission. "Let's see..." she said to herself, opening the small packet that contained all information on her target. " In the town of Garmosa, there have been sitings of large, rhino-like creatures that stalk the night. As Guardians, it is our job to make sure that this is only rumor. And if it be not rumor, than we must end this. Good luck on your mission. P.S. : I know we said this mission would be solo, but we're sending along a friend. Do your best to get along, yes?" Fate read out loud. Alright, fine. So the mission that was supposed to be her's and her's alone is getting a....significant other. She could live with this. Who could be worse than Luna or Mona? Then, a familiar voice called out her name.

Dammit.

"What are you of all people doing here? I thought you hated us Guardians." she said, silently cursing herself for asking that question. Anyone could be better than this. " Listen, the guys just called me up and ordered me to come along. I didn't ask for it." Ren sat across from her. Great. She was on a one-way train to Garmosa with the one person she hated the most, and he would have to be on the entire mission with her. Fate sighed as she stared out the window, causing Ren to look over at her. Ren shook his head and rolled his eyes," So." he copied her and started looking out the window. Fate glanced at him," So what?" she asked. Ren put his hands on the table that seperated the two," You and Victor, eh?" he nodded slowly. Fate looked directly at him," Oh, so you noticed that huh?" she asked, trying to find some hint of jealousy in his eyes, but couldn't see any. " Why do you ask?"

"You've heard what the other girls say, right? Rumor is that Victor Domino's a huge player around the school. And the girl's aren't the only ones saying it either; my friend Benjamin lost his girl last wee----" but he was cut off. Fate gave him one of her iciest glares," Let me hit you with the headline, okay? We are not friends anymore, not even associates. As far as I'm concerned, this is strictly business and nothing more. Don't expect me to get you out of trouble either. If you screw up on this mission, than you screw up on this mission. And if you end up getting us both in life-threating danger, than I won't hesitate to leave you behind. Do I make myself absolutely clear?" she took a slight breath. Ren laughed under his breath," Is that attitude really neccesary?"

"Take a guess."

Ren sighed sadly to himself and reached in his backpack, pushing things out of the way as the train came to a stop. Had it really been that long since it left the station? When it came to a complete stop, he tossed something on the table at her." I thought you might want that back." and he began walking off. Fate reached over for the object to inspect it, then realized what it was. This was the key ring that she'd given him for his 10th birthday. It only had one thing on it though, the only thing she'd put on it: a golden, star-shaped trinket. Fate looked at it, then at the identical one on her necklace. " I'd forgotten all about this..." she whispered to herself, realizing how long ago it had been since she'd taken this necklace off. Fate wrapped the key ring back in the napkin and stuffed it in her pocket. If he didn't want it, so be it. She would just throw both of them away and forget about it. Heading over to trashcan, she threw away the napkin.

But the star remained in her pocket.

" And do you remember the time we went swimming when we were seven?" Ren asked, laughing." I almost drowned that day! We had a lot of good memories back then, didn't we?" he looked over at Fate, hoping to get some kind of human reaction out of her. He knew he'd screwed her over. He'd screwed her over bad. But he was really trying to make it right. After all, she didn't know the entire story:

It was a rainy day, a day where he would have went outside to hang out anyway. Three of the elder Guardians sat in their living room. " So, my boy, do you understand? You will tell her exactly what we have said. She mustn't get distracted during her studies." one of them said to him. Ren frowned angrily," But why? She's my best friend; if she has business to tend to, then I'll let her tend to it! I don't see any reason to stop being friends!" he yelled. The three men dressed in all white looked at each other until they decided who would tell him. " My dearest boy, it's not just about your friendship. We have suspected that she might have developed....certain feeling for you over the past few years, and that could cloud her judgement if the occasion ever rose. But it won't, because if you don't stop it, we will find a way for not only you, but your entire family to suffer. We understand that you feel the same as her, but this simply cannot go on. Please understand our reasoning." they stood up to leave."Mother,Father! They can't do this, right?! They can't do this; it wouldn't be fair! And plus, isn't this blackmail?!" Ren pleaded, turning to his parents for support. But they only looked away," You have something to do, Ren. Shouldn't you be doing it?" his father walked away. Ren took in a sharp breath," No...you guys can't do this....right...?" he whispered through breaths. His mother put a hand on his shoulder," I'm so sorry. " and then, she too left.

And so, with no other choice, he did what he was asked of.

The feeling he got as he said those mean and hateful words to Fate tore him up on the inside, and he wanted to die right there as he saw the misunderstanding, sadness, and hate in her eyes that she now felt for him. And as she sped off down that hill that they always met at, he leaned up against that cherry blossom tree and silently cried to himself.

Man, if only she knew.
