Michelle's POV
Dakota has always been my littlest girl. Her sister Collins and her were so close, even though they were a whole three years apart. The two shared clothes, talked to each other constantly. Collins left for college in Toronto a year ago and Dakota wept and wept. Walked around in a daydream for days on end, missing her sister with her whole heart.
Dakota had never been one to open her heart to anyone else. Kept her feelings inside and was always a quiet girl, I guess you could say, but she was always smiling her wonderous smile. Laughing eyes always sparkling. Golden hair of hers bouncing when she walked.
My littlest girl. My poor girl.
Dakota had just gotten her first car for her seventeenth birthday. Just a little silver car to get her through her last year of high school and ready for college. She jumped up and down the minute her father handed her the keys and hugged him with all her might. She had the car for about two months before it happened.
Dakota had been in the hospital for an entire month now. She looks the same, like she could wake up at any moment, but she stayed still breathing ever so slightly. My youngest of two daughters, I couldn't bear to see her like this. And at only seventeen too. Doctors tell me it's her brain. Other than that she looks perfect as ever, just as if she were sleeping. I try to come to the hospital every chance I get, but my life as an art teacher can't just be put on hold.
It was a cool autumn day. Dakota was headed off to a ffriends house on the other side of town. Headed down the highway, listening to the radio, just like any other day. A drunk driver hung over from the night before couldn't keep control of his truck. Took my little girl away from me, and put her in this hospital bed.
"She's brain damaged" doctors would tell me, as if it was just an easy sentence. "She's only in the early stages, we can't confirm deatils yet, but it could be permanent memory loss."
And I would break down and cry.
