I clicked the button on Instagram that allowed you to direct message other users. With a nervous gulp I began to type the message.
Hey Avery! I love your photography, and I really want to get to know you. Do you have any messaging or video chatting apps we could talk on? I understand if you're not comfortable talking to me since you don't even know me!
I quickly clicked the send button before I could change my mind about sending Avery the message. My mind wouldn't stop thinking about how she would react to the direct message. Grey's Anatomy seemed like a good way to not think about it; so I turned my TV on and logged into to Netflix. Then, I scrolled through a bunch of previous episodes of the popular show and found the episode I had left off on.
It seemed like many hours of watching Netflix had passed when Avery finally responded to my message. Just as I was about to open up my phone to read her response, someone knocked on my bedroom door.
"What?" I hollered as I curiously thought about what my parents wanted.
"Can I come in?" Mom asked.
"I guess," I responded as I paused my TV.
"I'm really sorry that I got your hopes up before I told you when we were actually going to D.C.; I just couldn't wait to tell you!" Mom exclaimed.
"Mom, don't worry about it, it's fine," I told her.
"Okay! Your father and I have some big news to tell you though, and we thought we would take you out for some Starbucks and tell you there," Mom said as she smiled at me and walked out of my room.
As I walked downstairs, I thought about what my parents would tell me. Maybe we're moving, or Mom and Dad are finally going to let me get another cat! I thought to myself as I stared out the window in our family's grey Subaru. It seemed like we had barely been in the car when we pulled into the Starbucks parking lot. As I hopped out of the car, I thought to myself that whatever they want to tell me, it must be something big.
