Chapter 3- New Perspective

Mabel's POV-

***

The other half of the Mystery Twin, Mabel Pines, sat in the front of the classroom, watching the whole ordeal happen with her own eyes. When the principle came in, or at least, she guessed it was the principle because the man carried an air of authority to him, she felt sorry for the sucker who got in trouble on the first day of school. So when the teacher called on her brother, Dipper, she let out a small gasp that she hoped no one had heard, she didn't want to drag attention to herelf. She turned her head to look at Dipper, like most of the other kid's ended up doing. Mabel had no doubt that they were all wondering what in the world Dipper could do when they've been in school for less than an hour.

But Mabel was more concerned about how Dipper looked at that moment. Awful, in her opinion. He had bags under his eyes- though one was hidden by the weird eye-patch he always wore- his curly hair looked unruly and even more messy than it usually does. All in all, it looked as if Dipper hadn't gotten any sleep for a long time, not to mention the fact that he looked as if he was in pain because he was clenched his fist over his left eye. His face was pale, drained of all color and his hand was clenched around the eye-patch that covered the side of his face.

Staring at her brother, she continued to watch as Dipper got up out of his seat, swaying a little bit before steadying himself, and walking towards the two adults. The three of them had a quiet conversation but since Mabel was sitting close to the front, she could make out little bits and pieces, though they were talking so quietly that all she got was the fact that it was about Dipper wearing his eye-patch. Mabel wondered briefly if Dipper would tell the adults how and why he wore that eye-patch but if her brother didn't tell any of his family what had happened to him, then she doubted he would tell two people he doesn't even know.

Their voices rose and Mabel was able to see that the principle probably wanted to hit Dipper but refrained from doing so. In the midst of the shouting, her brother suddenly hunched over as if someone invisible and punched him in the gut. She flinched as she heard the yelp Dipper released when he doubled over. She had never seen her twin act like this and wasn't able to come up with a reason for why he was in so much pain. It hurt her to see him like this and wished that he had told her what happened the week he had disappeared.

She watched as Dipper fled from the classroom quickly, ignoring the cries and shouts of the two adults in the room. Mable made a split second decision before getting up from her seat as well and ran after her brother, hoping to catch up with him. The new teacher called out to her to sit back down, but Mabel didn't listen and left the classroom just in time to see Dipper turn down a hallway opposite to the one she was in. The girl couldn't remember if she had ever seen Dipper run that fast, but she spent little time thinking about it before starting after him.

Mabel was out of breath by the time she turned the corner and watched Dipper duck into the boy's bathroom. She stopped suddenly and pressed a hand against the wall to her left, leaning down to catch her breath. As her heart slowed down to a normal pace, she weighed her options of either going back to the classroom and try to talk to her brother later that day, or wait until he left the bathroom to ask him what had happened then. She decided on the latter before pressing her ear against the bathroom door to see if she could hear him. To anyone looking at her out of context, she knew it probably looked weird but she needed to know if her brother was okay.

All she could make out were noises that sounded as if Dipper was talking to someone but she couldn't hear what they were saying and she didn't recognize the voice of the other person in the bathroom. After a few seconds of no success, she leaned away and knocked against the wooden door. It only took a few moments before the door opened to her brother. His hair was disheveled, more than usual, and there were small fingernail marks in the skin around his eye-patch, but other than that, he looked as if nothing had happened. Color had returned to his face once again and he looked relatively healthy, besides the bags under his eyes.

"Mabel?" he asked, sounding surprised as he looked at her. "What are you doing?" He glanced behind him and Mabel followed his gaze to see if she could meet whoever it was he had been talking to, but there wasn't anyone else in the room that she could see.

"What do you mean, bro-bro? You freaked out in class and I was worried about you!" she said, her voice squeaking a bit as she basically shouted at him. "I didn't know what was wrong and you looked like you were in pain! I wanted to make sure you were okay," she continued, quieting down so they wouldn't get yelled at by more people.

Dipper glanced at her and shrugged, taking his attention away from the bathroom before stepping out and joining Mabel in the hallway. "I'm okay, just got a little worked up. First day of school and all." He wasn't looking at her, instead he was looking around the area that they were in. This was only the second time they had been in the Gravity Falls school.

Mabel knew it was a lie and it broke her heart. She wondered what had happened to him that made him feel as if he couldn't talk to her, his own sister. Even though she wanted to push for the truth, she let it go. She knew he wouldn't tell her unless he wanted to. So she smiled like everything was alright and took his hand, missing the way he flinched at the contact, and led him back to the classroom. The girl just hoped everything would go back to normal, how it was before her brother disappeared, and then everything would be alright again.

She didn't know things were going to get a lot worse for both her and her brother very soon.
