I'm walking back home after waiting for so long in the blasted home. No one came and apparently the rumors were correct. When in the same room, for too long, with the blade, it becomes painful. If not left alone then it could cause a slow painful death.
I had to move around the house. Leaving the blade unprotected. I'm no good if I am dead. The only question I have is where they could be. It is their home and they should be returning. Yet it's already late and I can't get my wife all worked up. My wife. She is such a lovely woman. Donating blood once every year and volunteering at the church. As well as helping the girl scouts with their bake sales. She deserves to be kept safe and that is what I'm going to do. Especially for my little angel. Abetha. Only 3 years old and she has a wild imagination. Thinking the boxes are dragons and the Santa Clause likes broccoli. She is so innocent that it makes me worry even more if I am protecting her well enough. But I have to believe and push on that I have the best interest.
Walking inside the refuge, I notice the lights are at a very dim level. Which I found odd, because the refuge doesn't go this dim unless there is a killing. But all in all, they must have forgotten, and are probably in the conference room or patrolling the exits.
As I turn to light up the room, I was forcefully held back. Two men grabbing on to my arms and turning me back around. I do my best to fight them off but then I heard his voice. "Maras, you have betrayed The Port. You have stolen the sacred dagger, killed a fellow member, and tried to disobey direct orders from me." The Head said. "Before you are killed, do you have any last words to defend yourself?"
The Head is spot on. I did kill a fellow member of The Port to get my hands on the sacred dagger. He was the only one that knew where it was. I followed him and found out that it was hidden in the conference room. In a secret little door, just behind The Heads chair. I killed him and threw his body out of the window before his blood dripped on the floor. But I can't let him think that. I can't. The only way out is to stall him. "I didn't kill and I didn't steal. Nor did I betray. You've got it wrong, I can promise you that."
"Are you saying that you are not responsible for Damon Rouge's death? His body was found to the side of the refuge. And the dagger is nowhere to be found. Most importantly, you were not around. Any excuses?"
"It isn't an excuse if it's true. I only wanted revenge on the creature that killed him. I was only minding my own business when I heard Damon's body fall on the floor. I took a peek, saw the creature dragging his body out the window, and was about to take the sacred dagger. I attacked her and she didn't kill me. Because at one point I got the dagger and pointed it at her. She jumped out the window and fled. So I went after her. That is all." There was silence, which I took as people not believing me. "Plus, don't you think that if I killed him I'd do a better job at hiding the body? Wait here and let everyone assume that Damon was the backstabber? It seems like a better plan than me putting my life on the line."
Every member of The Port was looking at each other. Debating if I was telling the truth or not. It did seem logical since I have a wife and a daughter. A family where I wouldn't want to leave them. It seemed like a good "He is telling the truth." I hear Maalik's voice boom. Most of the members already showing signs of anger, just seeing him. "I know, I know. You all hate me. I get it, but he is telling the truth."
"You're an adept wizard, how could we trust you?"
"You can't but believe me, you could take him to any other wizard or witch, and they'll tell you the same."The Head gave the sign to the members to let me go. I was pushed to the ground and got back on my feet. "You have only one chance to prove yourself. You fail, you die. Simple as that."
