Jane swore she saw the blonde's - Petra?- jaw drop slightly as the guy gave her an amused sort of smile.
'Jane. Nice name. I'm Rafael.' It was a bad compliment, considering how absolutely unique her name was. But she would take it. From a guy like him. You know. Hot.
'Nice to meet you. Uh, which year are you in?' Jane found herself unable to stop from asking more. It was like the invisible barrier that automatically erected itself whenever she encountered a guy had suddenly vanished, and she had become the blabbermouth she usually was around her friends.
She didn't understand why, but she couldn't say she hated it.
'Sophomore. You?'
Unfortunately, Jane was struggling with the lock on her locker so much she couldn't really answer properly. 'Ugh, this thing just wouldn't...'
What Jane was expecting was for Rafael to at least be concerned and ask if she needed help. What she did not expect was for him to say:
'Hey, I have to get to the next class. See you around.' he went off with the blonde hanging on his arm.
Jane's shoulders slumped as she stared at the padlock in defeat.

After an embarrassingly quick attempt on the school custodian's part in opening the locker, Jane dumped the textbooks she didn't need for the day inside & hurried towards her first class. Her mind was still on Rafael, and her heart had sank with the sheer disappointment of his lack of trying.
Ah well, I'll just put this behind me and hope that I can make new friends. She was missing Lina and her mind was already sending out a mental text to her best friend.Jane had pushed open the door to the classroom, wanting to find a nice spot up front but found her plans totally dashed and her cheeks flare with heat when twenty pair of eyes looked up at her from casually spread out positions on bean bags.
'Sorry, I'm... late?' Jane peered down at her watch, which was set to the precise second to the school's, and felt perplexed as to how it might have suddenly stopped as she had just put in new batteries the previous night.
'You're not, Ms...Villanueva.' the teacher read her name from the attendance sheet. 'They're simply early. Very eager bunch, I must say.' he smiled. 'Pick a bag, we're just getting started.'
That didn't really put Jane at ease. One, because she was the eager one when it came to things, and it was something she felt secretly proud of when people praised her about it-- & this only rekindled her fear of having to be overly competitive.
And two, Mr Chavez was nothing like (the angsty balding man) she'd pictured. He was, quite simply put, hot. And attractive people intimidated her.
Trying to maintain her coolness despite her cheeks which were heating up steadily, Jane plopped down on a beanbag right at the back. It was either this or the one next to an unfriendly looking girl who had her arms crossed and was currently whispering something in her friend's ear.
'So Jane, you have not missed much, really. Our first week was mostly just mini trivia and fun. We were just going to get into groups for the first assignment.' A collective groan rolled through the classroom. 'But, I will allow all of you to pick your partners. Just this round. With the exception of you two.' he zeroed in on the pair of identical twins giggling.
The twin with a purple ribbon in her hair started to open her mouth to protest, but her other twin was already eyeing a handsome boy sitting up front.
'OK, please get into your pairs.'
It was clear that everyone had figured out each of their alliances. Soon, only sulky purple ribbon twin and Jane were sitting alone. Jane got up reluctantly and sat beside her.
'Hi.' Jane said nervously, trying to meet her gaze even though the girl was avoiding her eye.
'Just... don't speak.' she hissed lowly.
'Any issue, Victoria?' Mr Chavez looked at the both of them.
'We're good, Mr Chavez.' Victoria pasted on a toothpaste ad worthy fake grin.
Jane just slid down lower in her beanbag and willed the bell to go off.
