'Heyyyy!!!' Jane's face split into a Cheshire cat grin as her best friend's face popped up onto her screen. It had been a week of not contacting her, but Jane was sure that Lina was merely busy with settling into college life and being the social butterfly she is.

'Janeeee!' Lina waved excitedly at the camera. 'How are you, mi amor?'

Jane couldn't stop grinning. 'I'm alright. I actually made a new friend! And a new enemy, maybe.' she shrugged. 'how about you?'

'That sounds great! Well, cept for the enemy part, but.' Lina hiccuped and started giggling. 'Oops.'

'You okay there, girl?'

'Yeah, yeah.' Lina nodded way too vehemently between hiccups. Jane spotted a suspicious looking bottle to her right that was halfway out of the camera.

'Have you been drinking?' Jane raised an eyebrow.

'Don't be a buzzkill Jane, it was just a little.' Lina's face looked really flushed. 'It's what the cool kids here do.'

'Oh... Just don't overdo it. You don't have to prove your worth to them by ingesting disgusting alcohol.' Jane said kindly.

'Are you for real, Jane? This stuff is excellent.' Lina exclaimed. Someone started to pound on her door heavily and Lina got up to open it. It was a lanky redhead, who to Jane's utmost horror, was holding another bottle of vodka and dressed in the most skimpy looking outfit ever.

'Jane, meet my friend Tracy. Tracy, this is my best friend Janie.' Lina giggled.

'Hi Tracy.' Jane gulped. 'What's up?'

'Your friend is so cool.' Tracy said to Jane. 'She told us about her trip to Hawaii and how she hooked up with a hot guy.'

'Oh.' If Lina had really done that, this was her first time hearing about it. 'Listen, she's a real lightweight, so uh, maybe stop her from drinking for now.' Frankly, Jane just wanted Tracy out of the room. She needed some quality time with her best friend and tell her about her play idea. Lina had always been a little more outlandish than Jane, but she had always stayed within acceptable boundaries. If Lina's parents were here, they would have an aneurysm.

'Janice is right, you gotta stop.' Tracy gently pried the bottle away from her. 'Let's go down for games okay?' she raised an eyebrow.

But Jane saw that eyebrow raise and fumed silently.  Clearly it was code for something else illicit that Jane wouldn't approve.

'I'll talk to you soon then, Lina.' Jane said in a strangled tone as her best friend shot her a groggy smile and the screen blacked out.

'...not throwing away my SHOT!'

Everyone finished with a graceful flourish as the music drew to a close. Luisa wiped a pretend tear from her eye and stood up, clapping loudly.

Beside her, Jane was unusually quiet and pensive. She had been observing the performers, especially Petra. All of them were genuinely gifted singers and dancers. She noted with slight disdain how Petra, or Angelica Schuyler, was awfully... graceful. Petra was infuriatingly perfect at everything she did.

Jane had never performed theater before, but she knew about understudies. And she was determined to get her and Luisa roles as one. She had listened to all the soundtracks the night before, and after doing some quick Googling, decided she wouldn't mind playing any of the Schuyler sisters understudies. As long as it wasn't for Petra.

As the performers went round backstage for a break, Jane spotted a lady with curly hair and spectacles down the bridge of her nose. She seemed like a very intense person and Jane approached her nervously, her posture straightening instinctively as she closed in on her.

'Hi, M'am.' Jane turned on her trademark bright smile. 'I'm Jane Villanueva and I'm a freshman. This is my friend Luisa. We were just watching their performance--'

'I was absolutely blown away by the costumes, the set and most importantly, that improv acting! Like, I thought it would be a flop if they did improv for something as historically significant as Hamilton but gosh, it worked out so flawlessly!'

The woman grunted noncommittally without looking up from her phone. She was typing away at the speed of light, a small frown etched on her forehead.

Really?

'Well, we're interested to be a part of your production team.' Jane cut to the chase, earning a light slap on the arm from Luisa, who probably wanted to butter her up some more.

The woman finally looked up from her phone, a puzzled frown on her face. 'Are you from the theater club?'

'Well-'

'No credentials, no go.' she resumed her speed texting.

'M'am, we just want to be understudies. I mean, their performance is show-stopping with all due respect, but can you imagine what would happen if just one actor falls sick? God, that will be such a tragedy!' Luisa exhaled melodramatically.

'Ok fine. If you girls can prove you're up to the role.' she finally looked up, scrutinising Luisa and Jane from head to toe. 'First, you have to LOOK your part.'

'What do you mean?' Jane said nervously. Were her boobs too tiny? Was she too fat?

'Well, the girls have everything down. It's more important that we have back ups for the guys. What do you say?' she looked at them expectantly.

'Yes, definitely!' Luisa said, squealing with excitement. 'Thank you so much!'

'We have rehearsals every Monday and Wednesday after school at 5. Don't be tardy or you're out.'

'Thank you so much, uhm...' Jane stumbled.

'Just 'm'am' will do.' she answered curtly and promptly walked away.

'Oh my gosh, thank you Jane!' Luisa hugged her new friend fiercely. 'I don't know what I would have done if you haden't dragged my butt to this.'

'Hey, I'm doing this for myself too.' Jane said playfully as a smile crossed her face.

Maybe college wasn't going to be that bad.
