I'm jerked awake.
The tiny room is shuddering.
Beside me, Chad's eyes jolt open.
Then the movement stops.
The elevator has stopped.
It's finally stopped!
Hope burns in my chest.
Maybe we're about to be set free.
We both scramble to our feet.
I notice a number illuminated above the metal doors;
Eight.
Before I have chance to process this, the Open button lights up. We both rush forwards.
We share a look.
"We don't know what's out there," I say.
"It has to be better than this," he whispers.
My finger hovers above the button.
I look up at him.
He nods.
I take a deep breath and plunge it down.
Chad grabs my hand in his and we look straight ahead – waiting.
My heart pounds in my ears. I can feel the clamminess of Chad's hand in mine, and feel the tremble in his body.
The metal doors slide open.
