It was finally Friday. Sure it dragged on but at last it was here. Arianna gave me a quick call this morning telling me that she wasn’t going to come in today. I knew that she was just extremely nervous instead of ill but I’d have to wait for her to come round. I told Quinn to drive to school without me as I was running a bit late, she said that was fine. The reason I was running late was because I had slept in. It was around half past eleven when I got dropped home last night and that was quite late for me. So now I was running round my room looking for something cute to wear. If it weren’t for me having to be Jake’s girlfriend, I would have thrown on the first thing my eyes landed on. But no… now I had to “put some effort into how you dress” I recall Jake’s words. This means no cute skirts or floral dresses. No pink or patterned clothing. I had to be badass.
I managed to find a pair of black leather pants that looked kind of badass, so I threw them on and continued my search for a top. I hated wearing white tops with black bottoms but I had no choice as school started in forty five minutes. I threw on a loose cropped top from Urban Outfitters that had geek written on it in huge black caps and showed the bottom half of my stomach. I didn’t bother with make-up and threw my hair up into a messy pony. I would never even dream of wearing anything like this to school. Leather pants… never! Stomach on show… uh uh! But I had too all because I was Jake’s stupid girlfriend.
Skipping breakfast, I grabbed my keys and ran to my car. I swear that was the fastest drive to school ever but I was at least here with twelve minutes to spear. Not many people were hanging around outside it wasn’t till I got to my locker that I realized why. Will and Jake were fighting right beside my locker. They weren’t physically fighting but in a minute they probably would be.
“Just accept it she loves me you’re just a little phase she’s going through probably to get back at me.” Will says taking a step closer to Jake.
“Face it Will, she’s over you but you can tell yourself whatever you need to hear but the fact will still remain. She. Is. Over. You.” Jake tells Will before the first punch was thrown. Blood trickled down Jake’s nose and the fury rose in his eyes. Will had just punched Jake, and possibly broke his nose, now Jake was going to put him in hospital.
I had to move my feet before one killed the other; before Jake killed Will. I dropped my bag and ran to put some space in between them, I could feel the hatred radiating of their bodies, as I turned to face Jake. I knew two things that a) if I could get Jake to calm down and walk away from Will the school would think Jake and I are a real couple and b) when Jake got in a fight the opponent was sure to lose, and as much as I hate Will right now I do not want him dead.
“Hey” I start trying to find the right words to say. I have never needed to calm anyone down before. Not a baby, a toddler, a child, a teenager, an adult, an elder. I have been needed to bring Arianna out of an episode but this is different.
“Brooke, get out of my way” Jake says pushing me away from him and Will. I stumbled a little before regaining my balance and placing myself back between the two boys.
“Jake he’s not worth it!!” I say trying to capture his attention but his eyes didn’t leave Will’s. I placed my hands on his chest, I could feel his heart beating rapidly and I wasn’t exactly sure why Jake hadn’t punched him yet. It was as if he was trying not to- he was holding back for some reason.
“Told you she’s still loves me” Will said sarcastically fueling Jake’s fire.
“Actually Will I couldn’t care if you lived or died but I’m just looking out for my boyfriend.” I turn and tell Will. He looked a bit stunned by my statement as it was the first time I had referred to Jake as my boyfriend. Throughout the week girls, I had never spoke to before, had come up to me and asked if Jake and I were going out or… if I were a couple. It was always yes or no questions so when I the word escaped my mouth, in front of nearly every senior in the school, it definitely felt weird.
