Chapter 3
I made it through the doorway as the bell for first period sounded over the intercom. Everyone was already in their seats as I scurried to my desk and threw my bag on the floor. Quiet whispers were running around the classroom. I noticed one voice in particular. Landon, from the desk beside me, was chatting up with a petite blond from my grade, 10th. I overheard her say, “So Landon, I was meaning to tell you that my parents are out of town for the weekend and wanted to know if you wanted to hang out.” Out the corner of my eye I saw her twirl her hair between her fingers and flutter her eyelashes.
My stomach churned in disgusted. I did not want to think about what she was implying they do in the slightest. I didn’t even knew this girl but I felt bad for her. She was just another person to fall under Landon's fake charm. Unlike her I saw straight through it. That was probably because I’d grown up with him.
His reply to her offer took me off guard. “Sorry, but I can't. I have a lot of things I have to do. Maybe another time.” His voice was full of disinterest.
I heard her say, “Oh,” in a voice that seemed taken aback.
Landon turned around in his seat as the teacher stepped into the classroom. “Alright class. Settle down now.”
I shifted my attention from Landon to the front of the room. That was a first.

The beginning of the day seemed to drag on. It was just as boring as any other school day. I was relieved when lunch time finally rolled around. I caught up with Aurora at our usual lunch table that consisted of her and me; along with Landon, Hayden and a few of their snotty friends.
“Hey. How has your morning been?” Aurora striked up conversation when I was seated by her across from Hayden and Landon.
“I've had better.” I attempted to open up my milk carton without it working.
“Oh. What happened?” She took the carton from me and successfully opened it in one try.
“Nothing happened. It's just Monday, and Mr. Charles gave a lecture about the War of 1812 first period. I barely made it through.”
“I know. That was a killer,” Landon jumped in.
“Right? And most of the time it is about nothing that is going to be on tests. Just useless information that we will forget by next week.” I took a sip of my milk and set it down on the table.
“Sometimes I think he just wants to bore us, just to see us suffer.” Landon eyed my hot dog that I had yet to touch. “Do you want that?”
I picked it up and hid it to where he couldn't see it. “Yes, I do.”
“Are you sure?”
“I think I am,” I replied sarcastically. “But I'll give you half,” his face lit up, “if- you give me your green beans.”
Landon thought about it for a second. “Deal.” We made our trade and began to eat.
“Nice to see them getting along for a little while. That's a first,” Hayden spoke with a mouth full of potatoes.
“Shut up and eat your potatoes,” I playfully glared at my brother from across the table.
