Liam : Yo G! Just got back home from my first week of school. Wanna skype when you're out?
School here had let out, but with different time zones, she was an hour behind me. I would have to wait an hour before talking to my long distance girlfriend. That word didn't sound right. Girlfriend. Could I still call her mine? I've barely talked to her this week, occasional texts and the rare Skypes, sure, but nothing more. I sighed as I took the bus home, taking up a whole 3 seater to myself. I start going through my bag, looking for a homework assignment that I could quickly do until I find my English homework which was to analyze a song lyric or two and write an essay about how it might relate to your life. I quickly pulled up a song, put it on repeat as I started to write my essay on the lyric, relating it to previous relationships.
I know it gets hard for you to stay,
But do you really want to throw it all away?
I manage to finish a lot of the essay on the bus before it gets to my stop where I'm practically thrown out of the bus. I start to walk home from the bus stop, shoving papers in my bag as I open my phone to scroll through Facebook. I see our little clique from California all together for a photo, smiling. My best friend that I had quickly lost touch with had his arms wrapped around G and she was giving him a hug.
They're just friends. Gwen is mine. Not his.
I kept repeating that line over in my head until I felt confident in the sentences I was saying. The song is on a constant loop and i hear the same lyric again, but thinking more about it.
I know it gets hard for you to stay,
But do you really want to throw it all away?
Does she even still like me? Where is our relationship going?
I get home, and I immediately sank into the couch in the basement when I got downstairs. It was a stressful week, I already had at least 2 papers due by Monday, and way too many forms to fill out.
I still had 30 minutes left until Gwen was let out from school, or prischool as she referred to it. No one was home and I hoped that there would be some leftovers from last night, but there wasn't.
Time to go out. I take my wallet out from my pocket and open it up to see exactly 6 dollars and 96 cents. Dammit. I don't have a job anymore. I take the six dollars out and shove it into my pocket, leaving the house to go to the nearest Tim Hortons, which conveniently wasn't in town. There was a Starbucks though, placed across the busiest street in town. There's signs littered everywhere on telephone poles and trees saying "DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE" which I "acknowledge" before quickly crossing the street with my phone in my pocket. As soon as I get across the street, I make a left, getting into the little shopping square. To the right of the supermarket, there was a crowded coffee shop along with some other major fast food chains. Walking on the curb, I get to the busy coffee shop to walk into a huge whiff of coffee and delicious baked goods. I step in line, admiring the people chattering and the new flaky biscuits that were freshly made.
"Excuse me. Sir, it's your turn!" A high-schooler said from behind the counter, waving his hand a foot from my face. I look up to see one of the kids from the clique, the tall kid that looked around my age with ebony hair and was sporting a purple t-shirt earlier. He changed, but he was still wearing some purple converse.
"Hey! Aren't you Parker's friend?" I ask as I look up the menu. "A large vanilla iced coffee please. My name is Liam."
"Isn't it too cold for that? But yeah, I am. I"m Sean and that will be $3.45! Your coffee will be be over there." He says, pointing to the little pick up area to the left of him as he finishes writing up my order for the barista who will be taking care of my coffee. "I'm now available to serve!" He calls, through the line as a new customer takes my spot. I sit down at one of the little tables, opening my phone up to see 3 new texts. 2 from Gwen and 1 from Parker. I read Gwen's first, because, well, priorities.
