"Dalton, are you sure you wanna go to that party?" Dalton's mother questioned uncertainly, watching her son put on his eyeliner in his bedroom mirror. Dalton nodded.
"This is the first time I've been invited to anything like this," he enthused. His mom still looked at him worriedly. "But...you don't even like big crowds. Do you know anyone who is going?" She asked.
"Um..." Dalton hummed, smudging his eyeliner purposely and placing a flower crown on his head, positioning it just right. "Well, I know who's gonna be there, and it's not supposed to be too many people," he attempted to reassure her as well as himself, pulling on his jacket.
"If you're sure," his mom sighed, walking with him to the front door. "Just text me if you need anything," she fretted as he slipped on his flower-pattern docs. "I will mom, don't worry," he laughed. "Love you, bye," he called as he walked out of the front door, closing it quietly behind him.
He walked down the street, taking a left and crossing. After a few more minutes of walking in the glare of the streetlights, he started to hear loud music in the distance. As soon as he rounded the last corner and saw the throng of people, his first thought was, 'Why the fuck did you decide to put yourself through this?' Then he remembered.
He was putting himself through this because MacKenzie Bourg, one of the school's top basketball players and one of the most well-known students, was hosting this party. He had been falling head over heels for MacKenzie from afar since the beginning of high school, and now that he was in grade eleven and MacKenzie was graduating this summer, this was one of his last chances to actually talk to him.
It wasn't that MacKenzie was a bad person - he was far from it. People just didn't seem to notice someone like Dalton, unless it was in a negative way. He knew from his own experience that MacKenzie was a kind person; the only time he had ever spoken to him was when he had gotten his books knocked out of his hands in the hall, and MacKenzie immediately helped him pick them up. But he didn't take the chance then to talk to him. He just said a quick thank you and got away as fast as he could before his heart exploded.
He repeated his reason for coming here over and over in his head as he threaded his way through the crowd, giving his name to the guy at the front door. After being let in, he walked slowly to a corner of the large living room, quietly watching everyone.
His heart skipped a beat as he saw a familiar head of brown hair weave it's way through groups of people - it was MacKenzie. Dalton watched as he sat on the couch, confidently engaging in conversation with the people around him. He wondered what it was like to feel that confident. Or confident at all, really. He knew many people drank to be more outgoing, but he had never touched alcohol before, so he felt a bit hesitant to actually try any.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a bulky figure walking directly towards him. He turned to see who it was and made eye contact with James, one of the basketball jocks who often shoved him around. Swallowing nervously, Dalton quickly started walking away, disappearing into the kitchen and letting out a sigh of relief when he wasn't followed.
"Want something?" A voice spoke next to him, and he jumped. A guy he'd never seen was holding two red cups filled to the brim with a strong smelling liquid. He opened his mouth to politely decline, but paused. Maybe he'd just give it a try. He wasn't great at self control, but he knew he wasn't going to make any progress feeling how he was now.
"Uh, sure, what is it?" He questioned, taking a cup. The guy shrugged. "I dunno, a mix of beer and vodka, I think," he said uninterestedly, walking back to the table. Dalton eyed the drink, then lifted it to his lips, taking a sip. His face scrunched up at the burning bitter taste. If this was what people always raved on about, they had problems.
