The second the doctor said it was okay to go back to school, I had Damian drop me off bright and early. It still hurt to move my arm, but I was sick of just being at home. So the team had advanced in the playoffs, my replacement doing a very good job of working with Leo. I was happy for them. I knew how important this year was for Leo. I was caught up on homework thanks to Eric, so my grades had not slipped. Sure enough most people gave me the general sympathy speech but really didn't care. After school I went to football practice. "Hey Morgan, glad to see you on your feet," Leo says when he sees me on the bleachers," can't wait for you to see the new running back." "Neither can I..." So the guy was amazing! Man some part of me wished he sucked for some reason, but he was fantastic. Every play he scored and got past Michael like if he wasn't even there. The team looked so pumped. Probably glad they weren't stuck with a girl anymore. When Leo looked over, I gave him a big smile and a thumbs up even though I felt like crud. Once practice was over, the new running back came over to the bleachers, helmet still on, jumping over the fence with ease. "So what you think, M? Good enough for our next game against the Knights?" I had to seat down. No freaking way! "Eric?! You're the new running back?" I gasp. "Yeah I played for my old school and when they asked me to try out I kind of didn't want to but the coach convinced me.." "Yeah he can be very persuasive..." He frowned, sitting down next to me, taking off his helmet. "M, I know its hard for you not being able to play," he says softly, " But I want you to know that I'm doing this for you." "Why? Because you say your my best friend?" "Yes and the fact that half of these guys are hoping to impress some scouts at the state finals and you would have done whatever it took to get them there..." How did he know that? "How...?" He laughed softly. "Why else would you continue to play this god forsaken sport? There is absolutely nothing in it for you in the long run," he say and that, for some reason, made me smile. At least someone could understand me. "Hey let's go to the lake," he says. "I have to get home..." "I'll buy you mint chocolate ice cream..." Nothing in this whole wide world would keep me from free ice cream. Sure I was a bit hesitant to get on his motorcycle, but he kept his promise and bought me ice cream so I could eat at the lake. "M, slow down," he says amused as I practically inhale the ice cream. "I haven't had ice cream in years!" I exclaim smacking his hand away. "Come on, share!" I tried to stare him down but no luck. He smirked reaching for the spoon. "No, you'll probably try to eat it in one bite! Open your mouth..." "M?" "Just do it," I say trying not to blush as I fed him a spoonful of ice cream. "You would always steal my ice cream as kids...I have to be sure you won't do that again..." "Fine by me." We sat for about two hours eating all the ice cream and talking about childhood memories. "Okay Eric, I'm glad you're back," I admit," I missed you a lot. Especially when..." No, I was not going down that road again. My father told me to forget, that it never happened. "When what happened, M?" "Nothing...just glad your back, its been lonely without you," I say softly," after you left, I didn't really make friends. Sure I had my teammates but..." I felt those tears trying to break free so I stopped talking. "Forget all that, let's just enjoy right now," he says putting his arm around me. I leaned into him, my head on his shoulder. I had my best friend back and now everything didn't feel so bad.
