I noticed her approach, saw how the other girls turned their backs. "Brenda, what's going on?" I ask as she seats with me as I was waiting for Eric during lunch. "So first thing, thank you for getting Leo to ask me to the dance," she says smiling, blushing as she looks over to the jock table, but frowns when she looks back," but fair warning, Stacy is beyond mad that Eric turned her down." "I feel so bad now," I say frowning," getting rejected is never easy." "I heard Eric asked you to the dance," she whispers, leaning closer, making sure no one heard," is that true?" "Well yeah...we've been talking about...being more than just friends," I say, instantly smiling when I saw him walk in through the door. Brenda's eyes widened but she smiled at me. "Should have seen that coming," she says as Eric seats down. I grimaced as he stole a handful of fries. "M, I'm starving, give me some of your burger," he says. "No! Get your own," I say smacking his hand away," and get me a water while you're at it." "Fuck, okay, always so bossy," he says giving me a dirty look but going anyway. "Though with his temper, I'd be careful if I were you," Brenda says," just in the time he's been here, he has, busted plenty of heads." "Yeah I know, but he is actually a sweetheart and I trust him..." "I'm glad, though to be honest after four years I thought you had a thing for Leo...I was a bit jealous since you talk to him so easily..." "Leo's great and fun. Talking to him is a no brainer. Just be yourself and you'll be fine," I say taking a huge bite of my burger. "I get crazy nervous around him though..." Brenda says playing with her bracelet," I don't think I would be able to even form a proper sentence around him." "Believe me," I say covering my mouth as I chewed," you'll be alright. Leo won't mind if your nervous but just try to be as comfortable as you can be." "Really? I thought he was just very superficial..." Brenda says biting her lower lip. I swallowed just as Eric came back. Probably cut in line, no one bothering to otherwise stay in line. He had a tray stacked with food, so I stole a pizza slice without even batting an eye. Brenda looked between us. "You know Morgan, Jesse and I are still going dress shopping after school, want to come?" She asks. I looked at Eric who just shrugged. "Yeah that be great because not only do I need a dress...I need shoes and everything else that goes with it," I say shrugging. Eric smirked, taking the slice of pizza back from my hand. "Perfect, see you later..." So apparently I was missing football practice so I could buy a dress. I had never hung out with Jesse and Brenda before but I found it to be very fun! We tried on different colors and fabrics, talking and laughing the whole time. When Jesse came out of the dressing room in a tight red strapless dress, even I had to admit she looked good. "That's your dress," I say quickly, Brenda immediately agreeing with me. "Yes, good eye, Morgan! Jesse buy that dress now!" "Yeah I look beyond hot, Michael is going to love this dress," Jesse says and my mouth goes dry. "Your going with Michael? Wow didn't think that barbarian had the guts to ask anyone out," I say under my breath. Brenda snorted laughed as Jesse rolled her eyes. "And he didn't, I asked him," she says shrugging," his hot and I'm sure deep down he might actually hold a conversation but I just need eye candy." Brenda looked away uncomfortable. So she wasn't part of the trend. "How come you turned down, Leo?" Jesse asks after changing back to her regular clothes," I heard he asked you, Morgan." "I'm going to the dance with..." I say but Brenda cleared her throat very loudly, shaking her head in a very subtle way," with someone else." "Oh yeah, who?" Jesse asks looking hard at me. I felt like she was asking for some ulterior motive and I didn't like it. "Jesse, don't be rude," Brenda says annoyed," you've got your dress, now help us find ours." So Jesse kept asking who I was going with until finally we each had a dress and a pair of shoes to match. I called Damian to pick me up, leaving those two to gossip. "Look at you, never thought I'd see the day that you'd be out buying dresses," Damian says feigning shock," Did you have fun?" "Yeah for the most part," I say shrugging," I'm so tired though. My feet hurt and I feel like I need to take a nap. How do people do this for fun?" He laughed as we drove home. My father was at the kitchen table. We had not spoken since the altercation between us so it was a bit awkward walking past him to go to my room. I don't know what Damian told him but he had not even mentioned football or the big State game. It was super weird. I got to my room, looking over to Eric's window but it was dark on his end. I put my dress in my closet and went to take a shower. It still bothered me how pushy Jesse had been, like if it was that surprising that I actually had a date. Was it a shock that two people asked me to the dance? I forgot my shirt on my bed so I came out of the shower in a towel only to see Eric's light on and his window wide open. He looked up and we locked eyes. "I appreciate the view, M, but better get dressed before your brother catches us," Eric says, winking at me. I blushed like crazy this time! "Shut up! And stop staring!" I exclaim grabbing my shirt and running back to the bathroom. He was so dumb at times. When. I was fully dressed and ready for bed, Eric was already in my room laying down on my bed, watching TV. "Eric, what did Damian tell you?" I ask brushing my hair. "To stop crossing between our windows," he says shrugging," but he also said to keep an eye on you so..." I roll my eyes, dropping my brush on the dresser, climbing into my bed with him. "Jesse kept asking who I was going to the dance with today," I say using his arm as a pillow," I didn't tell her because she was being obnoxious." "Good, she is just being a noisy cunt anyway," Eric says annoyed," Brenda's turning out to be alright but the rest of them are just obnoxious." "I'm starting to think that going to this dance is a mistake. I don't even know how to dance..." "First of all this dance is organized by those cheerleaders. You won't even have to know how to dance. What they call dancing is just grinding on guys junk to be slutty, second who cares about any of that. I just want to go with you, to have fun and maybe who knows, we'll like it and stay. If not we can always ditch the place and go somewhere that we actually like." "I like that idea," I say," but first you need to win State, so go home and sleep, you have a big game tomorrow." "Its at Trenton and I heard Damian has a game too...will you be able to make it?" He asks. I nod, giving him a big kiss on the lips. "Wouldn't miss it for the world!" Once he was safely back in his room, I went to bed. I wanted to dream of us dancing the night away, no longer caring that Brenda had made me buy shoes that I had doubts I could walk in. It was definitely a ridiculous turn of events.
