Lila woke me up in the middle of the night whimpering. I asked her what the matter was while wondering why I was put in a room with her.
"Looky at my hand!! It's all red!" She cried. I turned on the light and shushed her. Then I examined her hand.
"That's blood Lila! How did you manage that?!" I asked surprised.
Lila looked at her feet sheepishly.
"Pwomise you won't tell?" She asked.
"Promise" I said. She told me the whole story as I rushed her to the bathroom and washed off the blood. When I was asleep, Lila had crept down to the kitchen and tried to cut herself an apple to eat. She'd obviously accidentally cut herself in the process.
"Right!" I said finding a bandage in the first aid box, "all sorted okay?"
Lila nodded and wiped her tears on her sleeve. The cut actually was quite big. It was deep too. I wonder how she wasn't howling. She is very young to deal with something like that so well. Once I'd put her back to bed, I went downstairs to the kitchen to clean up any mess that was made.
The kitchen surface was clean except for two drops of blood next to an unsuccessfully chopped apple.Sighing, I wiped the surface down and then to make Lila feel better,I finished chopping her apple up and then walked back upstairs with it. When I got there, she was lying in bed examining her bandage. I presented her with the apple and she smiled happily.
"Thank oo!" She cooed. "No matter how much other people don't like you, you are still my favourite person!"
She said this in her sweet 4 year old voice and for a moment my heart warmed and all of the mean bullies at school were put out of my mind.
But my tiredness got the better of me, so I hugged her goodnight and went back to sleep myself.
