PROLOGUE
Isaac's messy and dirty blonde hair is sticking straight up today. He looks rather funny, but I'm sure he still gets all of the ladies with it that way.
I mean, his light blue eyes that have hints of green in them, and his long and defined jaw line give him everything he needs. His hair could be coloured blue and purple with red flames in it and girls would still drop to their knees, if you know what I mean.
"Attention please." He says, standing at the front of the church. I stare at Isaac as he clears his throat and holds up the book that we received this morning.
"I will begin the reading of the Street Hockey League of Clarkeville rule book. I expect all sixteen of you to stay quiet in this process as these rules are important." The only thing about Isaac is that he is way too mature for his 17 year old self. Girls swoon at his looks but as soon as he talks to them, they scurry away as if he never existed.
I sigh looking at the size of the book. Most of it explains the game of hockey, but most of us already know how to play so Isaac has decided to skip that whole part and go straight to the new rules that have been created from the team captains all of the teams here in Clarkeville.
Including my best friend Matt, who is currently sitting next to me, in the first row of the church pews. He sits up straight, obviously proud of the rules and so I decide to listen to Isaac for the sake of Matt.
"Rule Number one." Isaac shouts shutting everyone up, including the Beaujolais twins, Hunter and Hayden who are almost impossible to keep quiet.
"All rules that apply to the sport of regular ice hockey, must be in thought and must be enforced at all times during practices and games, including the seasonal tournaments." Isaac suddenly places the book under his arm pit, pulls out his glasses from his front pocket and slips them on over his nose.
A completely different person.
"Rule number two. Roller skates must be on feet of all players except for the goalie, at all times during games and practices. If any player, excluding the goalie are caught not wearing roller skates during a game or a tournament, this player will be asked to sit out the game or tournament." Some people sigh at this, including myself.
This mean I needs to go out and buy a pair of roller skates and my parents are already pissed off with me enough because I just bought a new hockey stick.
"Rule number three." He smiles before reading. "No girls are allowed to take part in the games or practices." Some of the players behind me in the many other church pews sigh and curse.
"Girls, are permitted to attend games and tournaments as part of the team if they are considered as the team cheerleader." At this, most of the boys hoot and holler at the idea of hot girls dressed in close to nothing cheering us on as we win game after game.
"Rule number four. Goalies must wear all of the appropriate padding as well as the appropriate helmet. Ignorance of this rule will result in the goalie being kicked off the team." Isaac says, his voice slightly shaky. We all then turn to look at Flynn... are goalie.
"Relax. I got everything. I triple checked." He says, raising his hands in defense while his blue eyes show us the truth. We all relax and he runs his hand through his dark brown hair.
"Perfect. On to rule number five. Team managers are allowed to help manage a team and make sure that all rules are being followed. Team managers though, are not allowed to manage more than one team." Isaac gulps at this.
"Just you guys. Don't worry."
"Rule number six. Each team must come up with a team name as well as a place to practice. Game schedules will be emailed to team captains or team managers. Your practice lot will be yours for the year. " Isaac reads off.
"I have already emailed the head of the Street Hockey League committee and I have explained that we have chosen this abandoned church's parking lot as our practice zone." I smile and Matt does too.
"How many freaking rules are there Isaac ?" Xavier than shouts, his loud and booming voice echoing through the extremely acoustic walls of the church.
"Four more Xavier." Isaac explains sternly in his fatherly voice that me, Matt, the Twins, Xavier and Flynn know so well. Xavier falls back on the back of the pew, his long brown hair flying backwards. He sighs blowing a strand of his hair back and away from his eyes and then crosses his arms.
"Rule number seven. A team must be composed of 16 players, with three lines of players."
"Rule number eight. Hockey sticks, and street hockey balls as well as metal nets are the official equipment for games and tournaments."
"Rule number nine. Tournaments will be determined by your rank in the charts after each game. People who complain or cheat will be terminated from the SHL and will not be allowed to re-enter.""Last rule guys."
"Rule number ten. If for any reason you must replace a player on your team, tryouts will be created as appropriate by the team captain and first liners. As soon as player is picked, you must register the player in the roster for this player to be officially on the team."
"And that's it for the rules guys." Isaac says. Everyone claps and cheers and Matt stands up walking over to the Isaac.
"So now, all that's left to do is pick a name for our team." Matt announces.
As team captain, he had already thought of a few.
The best one though was the one I told everyone else about.
I turn my head to everyone behind me. They all lock eyes with me and we all smile to each other knowing exactly what our team name needs to be.
And so, with everything we have, the fifteen boys that look up to Matt, yell in perfect unison the words that start it all.
"The Slap Shots."
