Sam
"Fiona!" Sam shouts joyously as he sees his new best friend the next day at school.
"Hello Sam!" Fiona chirps back.
"I have a question that I promised my mommy that I'd ask you," Sam tells her.
"Okay? What is it?" Fiona giggles into her hand.
"I can't remember..." Sam gives her a look of defeat.
"Well, when you remember, please tell me!" Fiona takes his hand and leads him into their classroom.
They both find their seats at their table just as their teacher gets to the front of the class.
"Okay, children! Today we're going to be learning how to tell time from clocks. This right here is a clock..."
"Oh! Fiona! I remember now!" Sam whispers in the middle of the lesson.
"What is it?" Fiona whispers back, utterly curious as to what the question was.
"My mommy wanted to know if Phil - um - Lester is your brother?" Sam asks.
"He is! Why?" Fiona questions.
"I'm not sure, I think she said something about how he was one of her people that she has for counseling."
"Oh, yes. Phil is, I think, in a support group," Fiona lowers her voice to an even quieter whisper, "but he doesn't want people knowing that, so don't say anything!"
"I promise, I won't!" Sam agrees.
"Sam, Fiona! Pay attention!" The teacher scolds rather loudly.
Fiona always hated being yelled at, it was her least favorite thing. Every time someone yells, or even is close to yelling, she bursts into tears.
Sam looks over at Fiona and sees that she's trying to hold back tears. He reaches out and grabs her hand to let her know that she's okay.
He's really serious about wanting to protect her.
"Fiona, please don't cry! She's not worth the tears!" Sam comforts.
"Th-thanks Sam."
Sam gives Fiona a smile and lets go of her hand. The rest of the day they sit and listen to the teacher. Sam occasionally looking at Fiona to see if she's alright.
The children are finally dismissed for busses. Most of the children cheer for the end of the day, but Fiona doesn't understand why they do that. It's quite dumb if you ask her. She sighs as she watches Sam leave for his bus. But he doesn't leave without giving her a hug.
"Bye-bye Sam. See you tomorrow!" Fiona calls to him as he leaves.
Sam waves one last time to her and walks out the door to his bus. To his understanding, they live within walking distance from each other, how come they can't ride the same bus? Sam just shrugs the idea off as he gets on his bus.
The ride home is quite boring, like usual. He doesn't have anyone to talk to. Putting Fiona aside, he really doesn't have any other friends. He has maybe one or two but no really good, close friends. So, you could say that Sam was lonely. All he could really do on a bus ride was stare out the window. He liked it when his brother was in secondary school and rode his bus too. Because then Sam could talk to someone. But now that Dan is in high school, he doesn't have anyone to pester anymore.
When the bus comes to his stop, Sam runs off the bus mumbling a, "thanks" to the bus driver. He's come to the conclusion that he hates the bus. Very much.
When he walks into his house he smells cookies being baked and runs into the kitchen.
"Can I have one?" Sam asks with so much desperation.
"No, they are for my support group tonight," Mrs. Howell tells him.
"Can I come?" Sam ask with a hopeful tone.
"I'm not sure that's such a great idea..."
"Please?"
"Erm...fine. But you cannot stay in the same room. There's a playground outside, you can play on that." She goes back to making dinner as Sam runs upstairs.
He goes to knock on Dan's door, but he hears a strange sound he's never heard before...sniffling.
It's not the type of sniffling that you get when you're sick. It's like...he's been crying or something.
Sam desperately wants to check in on him, but he knows boundaries, so he decides against it. He, instead, goes back to his room to start on the little homework he was assigned.
As soon as he finishes, he walks back down to Dan's room and knocks on the door.
Sam hears a sniff and, "what do you want?"
"Erm...are you okay?"
"Yes. I'm perfect," Dan replies, obviously far from it.
"No you're not. I can tell you that much."
"Yes I am!" Dan yells, "now leave me alone!"
"Sorry for asking. I just was trying to be a nice, concerning little brother. Just so y'know, I'm going to be going with mum to her support group."
"But you're six. Why do you need a support group?" Dan asks, still sniffling.
Sam groans to himself, but says, "just because I want to. You should come too!"
"Why?"
"I dunno. You just should."
Sam hears shuffling and then the door unlocks and opens.
"I knew you'd listen!" Sam says, completely proud of himself. Dan just rolls his eyes.
