The slow, stable sound of a heart beat on the monitor emits through semi-silent room. White walls clad with a few framed pictures and paintings, tile grey, and dull blue curtains veiling over the large window. In the corner sat a wrinkled clothed, floral printed couch complimented by a couple matching chairs, but aside from the plain decor, in the center lay Brittany upon a hospital bed. Eyes closed, arms limps by her sides, breathing tubes connected through her nostrils as her parents and friends crowded around her. As the slight creak of door hinges pierces the air, a man dressed in white enters; clipboard in hand as he forces a smile.

"The test results have arrived," cue the rustle of paper against paper as he turns a page on the clipboard to reveal a set of charts and scrambled numbers.

"Is she going to be okay?" Conrad, Brittany's best friend, inquires as his grip around her hand tightens a bit; his heart tightening ever so slightly in his chest.

Clearing his throat, the doctor nodded, but his pursed lips suggested otherwise. As his lab coat rubbed against the material of his khaki pants, the doctor pushed his glasses up higher onto his nose as he stood between Jayk and her parents; extending his hands out so they would all be able to view the charts.

"During the impact," he began explaining as he raised an x-ray of her skull up into the air, "her body stopped moving, but her internal organs failed to do so causing her to be subdued in her current comatose state."

"What are you saying?" Her mother shook her head, tears brimming her eyes.

Scratching the back of his neck, the man clad in white sighed, "It will be a miracle if she wakes up and still has possession of her memory. Her brain rattled against her skull which could have possibly disconnected it from a few nerves."

Covering her face with her hands, her mother's body began trembling violently with sobs; the man beside her wrapping her in his arms, holding her tightly to his chest. Feeling tears begin to sting his own eyes, Conrad swallowed the thick lump in his throat; perfect white teeth peeking out to gnaw on the delicate flesh of his bottom lip.

"How long will it be until she wakes up?"

"Hard to say," lowering his glasses from his face, the doctor folded the arms smoothly before hooking them on the pocket of his lab coat, "it could be a few days, months, possibly a year."

"A year?" The young boy's voice was frantic as he raked a hand through his golden hair; the tears that had been pleading to be released finally being set to freedom as the salty water dripped from his chin.

Nodding once as an answer, the older man sighed, resting a hand on his shoulder, "Don't give up so easily, son. Obtain faith that she will wake up in no time, okay?"

Mutely, Conrad nodded his head as the man exited the room. Peering down at Brittany's tragic state, he clenched his teeth; hands flying to his hair as he tugged on the blonde strands violently. Plopping down into a seat beside her bed, he wrapped his hands around her own; pressing the top of her skin to his thick lips before closing his eyes; his heart sinking into the pit of his stomach as tears stained his tanned cheeks.

As the days of summer wore thin, the upbringing of autumn slowly spread throughout the busy city. Brittany still lay to rest, Conrad never leaving her side once despite his friends concern for him. He was an emotional wreck; a tragedy only written in novels and movies, but to every sorrow based plot finishes with a happy ending.

Dull, blue curtains tied back, sunshine flooding into the room as a ray blinded his closed eyes, but he chose to pay no mind to the sudden intrusion. Rather, he turned his head to the side, cheek flat against the wool blankets as his hand remained gripping onto Brittany's. Nightmares haunted his slumber, the demons following his every move. The meat on his bones had began diminishing; burning away with the calories he had forgotten to eat thoughout the day. Hollowed cheeks, leaner muscle, sable circled rimming the bottoms of his puffy eyes. He was truly becoming a mere skeleton; a skeleton who desired to give up, but his obduratey had a diverse plan.

Raising his head from the bed, he stretched out his back; groaning some as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. Blinking a few times as his eyes scanned the room, a slight tug on his hand caught his attention. Snapping his head to the right, he watched as Brittany's eyes twitched slightly.

"Brittany? Brittany? Can you hear me? Brittany?"

Hovering over now, he grasped onto her shoulder gently as tears began stinging his eyes again. Biting his quivering lip, he watched intensely as her eyes slowly lifted; revealing the beautiful chocolate shaded orbs he had missed dearly. Without uttering a word, he nuzzled her neck with his face; his tears squeezing from his eyes turning the skin of her neck slick with salty water.

"Conrad?" Her voice was weak and edged with concern as her hands traveled up his back to his hair where she clutched the somber strands gently.

Allowing his sobs to speak for him, he continued to weep into her neck; setting his knees atop the matress as he carefully pulled her into his arms. Resting her chin on his head, she began closing her eyes; fatigued as she began lulling into another slumber, but he quickly stopped her; remembering her calling him by his name.

     "You remember who I am?"

Furrowing her eyebrows, she nodded, "Of course I do! You're my best friend! Why are you crying? What happ-"

"Brittany!" He interjected her with his rejoice as he grinned; pulling her into a warm embrace.

Wrapping her arms around him, she smiled feeling the familiar comfort. Sighing a bit as they pulled away, she pushed a hand through his dark locks, "Tell me what happened."

"You were in a car accident which subdued you into a coma," he explained as he shook his head; his fingers lacing with her's, "you've been out for several weeks, possibly a month or so."

Swallowing the lump in his throat, he gripped her hand tighter, "And the doctors said that if you would wake up and still posess your memory, it'd be a miracle."

Feeling shock course through her body, she blinked a bit; her brain desperately attempting to soak in all the abrupt information. Gnawing at her bottom lip, she peeked up at him through her eyelashes, "You've stayed here, with me, for that long?"

Nodding his head, invisible fingers lifted the corners of his mouth upwards into a smile as he reached forward to pull her lip from her teeth, "I haven't left once."

"You didn't have to do that," she chuckled as she felt her body begin to heat up, cheeks dusting over in a powdery shade of red.

"You're right, I didn't have to," inhaling slightly before exhaling slowly through his nose, he smiled as he hesitantly rested his fingers beneath her chin, "but I did it anyways because I love you."

Snapping her head up at his words, she grinned; too speechless to utter a single word. Gazing into his eyes, she watched his face discolor to a light shade of red as he cleared his throat.

     "If you don't feel the-"

Drowning out his words with her lips, she smiled before pulling away; her hand running through his hair, "I love you too, Conrad."

     "Really?"

Nodding her head, he grinned as he pulled her head in for another kiss; this one being a bit more passionate. Pulling away, he pressed his forehead against her's, "I should go tell the doctors you're awake."

"No," she shook her head as her fingers clamped onto his shirt, "stay here for awhile before you do. They will want to take tests and what not and right now I want to spend a few minutes with you."

Smiling, he moved her over a bit before laying next to her. Wrapping her in his arms, she felt her head move to his chest, an arm wrapping around his torso. Kissing the top of her head, he closed his eyes as they laid there. It was nothing too big, just a simple embrace, but to feel his arms wrapped around her as she reacted to the embrace, that was special to him.

Just like every sorrowful story, there always lied a happy ending.
